Dashing away with the smoothing iron

I enjoy ironing, it is the job I most enjoy in my role as housewife. When I was younger I always did my ironing standing up. Now I prefer to sit down It means a rest for my legs after a morning doing housework. In a way I look forward to doing it. I used to iron everything, socks, towels underwear, although I was told by those who were less enthusiastic that this was going to flatten the softness out of the socks and towels. A friend of mine told me recently that she never irons. I was amazed, it seemed to me such a necessary part of doing the laundry. She is younger than I am and she suggested that most of her clothes did not need ironing at all. So I took a second look at mine – and she was right. Synthetics do not crease like the cotton things do and many of the old crushable materials are not part of the modern fashion scene anymore. I am still ironing my clothes but since looking at things through her eyes I have been able to lower the pile considerably. Blouses, towels, socks, underwear etc. just get folded and put away. She has saved me a lot of time and effort. Have you any good tips that result in less time spent on everyday jobs and a little more on MyLot?

@41combedaleroad Just stop ironing altogether. My mother just stopped one day and never took that hobby up again.

Ironing is also something that I love to do. I always iron my clothes, my husband shirts, but also the t-shirts, they look so much better ironed.

Iam pleased that someone else finds pleasure in it. My husband's shirts are always ironed too, even the ones he wears when doing jobs around the house or in the garden. I iron t-shirts too although I do have a couple that don't need ironing but they are synthetic.

@41CombedaleRoad I cannot stand wrinkled clothing, almost everything I buy is 100% cotton, because my husband is allergic to synthetic. Of course I also iron my bed sheets.

@LadyDuck It is quite difficult for me to find cotton clothing, which I much prefer to synthetics. This summer was too hot to wear synthetics and my summer wardrobe was limited because of this.

I very rarely iron these days. Most everything comes put of the dryer wrinkle free

The sun is my dryer and it has no regard to wrinkle free drying. I know what you mean though, I had a dryer once but at that time I did not have such hot sunshine.

@41CombedaleRoad if you're sun drying your clothes I can see why you would need to iron, I don't have the opportunity to dry my clothes outside so I have to rely on my dryer. But I'm also happy that I don't have to iron (it was never really a favorite chore of mine)
