Put the dead mole in the freezer!

Today I was just walking across a field when I found a dead mole. Just lying there on the grass. It looked quite fresh and there was no sign of any injury or struggle. It wasn’t decomposed at all or even smelly. It even looked healthy, if you can be healthy and dead, with sleek glossy soft fur, black all over (as expected) but with a surprising streak of bright orange on its belly. I picked it up for a closer look, and then thought that my daughters might like it - they have a small collection of curios including the skulls of a cat, a badger and a pigeon. So I brought it with me. The catch is that I’m away from home at the moment, and although I will be returning soon I’m not going straight home but have another stop en route. And I wouldn't want to carry a decomposing mole around in my car for two days. So when I spoke to Big One earlier I told her about the mole, asked whether she’d like it, and explained my dilemma. That was when she instructed me firmly ‘Put the dead mole in the freezer!’ And then we both started laughing because that isn’t the kind of thing you tell your mother every day! That should stop the decomposition for a little bit.

It would stop it indefinitely unless the freezer broke down!

@just4him Yes I wrapped it in a plastic bag and popped it in there.

I have put a note on the door so it won't be a shock!

@JudyEv I remember a story about someone who had a pet snake, and since it was only young it was too small to eat whole mice so instead they had to get special mouse sausages for it, and then one night the boyfriend came home a bit drunk, with a few mates... well you can guess the rest.

@Fleura We had a doctor in a country town who loved fishing and he used to keep big, fat, juicy maggots in the fridge. That used to turn my stomach a bit.

I made sure I labelled it and stuck a note on the door so it wouldn't be a nasty surprise!

Poor mole. It must've recently passed if you weren't seeing signs of decomposition.

I know, poor thing. Do moles have heart attacks?

I hope you wrapped it in a bag or something first, I hope she is not sick. Right now in Slovenia and Croatia there is a serious problem with a disease spread by mice. Moles are not mice, but better be careful.

I didn't think of that. Hopefully with plenty of precautions she will be OK. What is the disease from mice?
