I Kneed a Break

Or is it broke a knee? I've been having knee problems again lately. Hopefully nothing serious. I've been seeing a physical therapist regularly to work on my knees and keep me in top condition. But I can feel the pain. Might have to have some work done on the knees again after paintball season ends in a month. I've already had surgery twice. I've already been told I will need knee replacement surgery in the future, but am still too young for it right now. People say I'm a glutton for punishment by the way I play out on the paintball field during tournaments. I can't figure out why I keep having problems with my knees. I mean, look how graceful I look in the photo. How's your body parts holding up?

I am a hot mess. and I am doing nothing about it. ha My ex's family has notoriously awful joints. He had a hip replacement at 42 and still needs a shoulder replacement. He is holding off on the shoulder though because the recovery is so difficult. His younger sister has had both hips replaced this year. His mother has 2 prosthetic hips and 2 prosthetic knees. Her sisters have similar situations. It is crazy.

Wow, that is crazy! I wouldn't want to be a blood relative in that family! lol. Now I don't feel so bad about my own situation.

@NJChicaa Haha, I call my ex MIL the Bionic Woman because of all the replacement body parts she's gotten over the years.

@moffittjc At first I thought his mother was like a bionic woman b/c she had polio as a child but over the years it became clear that it is a genetic thing.

I'm surprised I still have joints the way they act sometimes. I'm thankful of course that they are the orginals, but I could live without the pain they cause.

@kaylachan Maybe I put too much faith in the future of sports medicine! haha. But I know the technology is improving with each passing year, so I'm confident I'll be in good hands when I finally get to the point where I need knee replacement surgery.

Almost all my cartilage is gone in my knees, so I have a lot of bone-on-bone rubbing, which causes quite a bit of pain. But so far my pain levels have been manageable, so I just keep going. It's all going to come back to haunt me later in life when I'm older. But I'm counting on medical technology to be able to fix the problem in the future! LOL

So far they’re holding out okay. I’m a bit stiff if I sit too long, but as long as I stay on the move I’m good. Maybe not as fast as I once was. Sorry that you have pain.

I'm the same way. As long as I keep moving I'm fine. It's when I sit for any period of time that I feel the knees stiffen up. Of course, when I'm playing in paintball tournaments I feel no pain at all because there is so much adrenaline pumping through my body. But afterwards is a completely different story! I know how those NFL players feel when they soak their entire bodies in ice water tubs after football games.

I just turned 70 on Sept 23rd(Happy Birthday, Kharla!) my knee is giving me problems. Kneeling down on my left knee is too painful. I injured it two years ago, slammed it into the pavement. Kobe came to my rescue, after tripping me on our walk. I stopped walking him, at that time. Your photo looks great!

Happy belated birthday! You’re so lucky you made it all the way to your 70s before expert knee pain! I have a feeling I’ll be a bionic man by the time I reach my 70s. Lol Thanks for the compliment on the photo. It actually makes me look somewhat graceful on the field, but trust me I’m anything but graceful out there!

Wow, are they going to do both of them at the same time? Usually, they like to only do one at a time. My orthopedic surgeon says artificial knees are generally good for about 15 years, so he wants me to at least be in my 60s before he considers knee replacement surgery. I've still got a long way to go before then, so I just hope my knees will hold up. I play a sport that definitely is abusive on the knees.

@Chellezhere I've heard of it being done too, but I think when it comes time for my knee replacements, I will want them done one at a time, and spaced out a couple of months apart. I knew from an early age that my knees would go bad, as it seems to be hereditary in our family. I haven't helped the situation any though because of my sports activities over the years.

@moffittjc I am in my mid-fifties, and my knees have been going bad since I was a child. My doctor will replace one knee one day, then the other two weeks later. But, my dad's widow was an orthopedic therapist. So, I do know some surgeons do replace both knees on the same day. Her employer was right-handed and always scheduled a left-handed colleague to perform the surgery with him.

@CarolDM And that's all we can ask. I'm doing a much better job of taking care of myself these days, but I'm afraid I probably already did a lot of damage in my younger crazier days. That toll on my body hasn't fully manifested itself yet. And hopefully I can keep it that way for a while.

I hope your knee issues go away soon and you don’t need another surgery . My boyfriend needs one more knee surgery but he is trying to hold off he is bone on bone. Once you have knee surgery you are not suppose to kneel on them and he needs to be able To do so

@Tina30219 I wear knee pads when I play paintball, which helps when I’m kneeling, but it doesn’t do much for when I bend them as much as the picture shows.

Sorry to read of your pan Jeff. That definitely sucks. My knees and everything else is grand so far. I have a tiny touch of arthritis in my right shoulder I believe was caused from the factory but mostly the hairdressing constantly lifting the arm up to cut long hair.

OH,boy! Your age is showing now buddy !! I sometimes wonder about doctors saying you will need xyz surgery. I was told the same thing about my knees over 20 years ago and I'm still hanging in there. Ditto on carpul tunnel. That I do believe was also some arthritis in there acting up. I seldom have problems with the wrists anymore; only if I stay on computer typing all day long. Then I have to take a break for a few days and it recovers. It makes you wonder if they get a kickback by referring you to the surgeon. My knees were both injured in the car wreck in 1979 and I had surgery on both at that time. I think all the pain I went through with that wreck and the multiple sugeries have kept me at a high pain level tolerance. I feel your pain though. My knees are probably the #1 pain area. I am having trouble with my right foot now. Going to get xrays next time I go to the doctor.

@moffittjc I think I am almost back to getting the injections in the knee. They are going to have to hurt bad this winter for me to go back through that though. Hubby just started getting those last year and they really helped him. It got to where mine wore off in 3 weeks and that was just not worth it to me. I do not like needles and that is a big one. And it hurts

@kareng I don’t mind needles, but I have a low pain tolerance, so I don’t like the “it hurts” part. I’ll probably pass on the injections unless they can find a pain-free way to do it.

@DocAndersen Yes, I know I shouldn’t complain about the knees, since it is self-induced, but the paintball gig provides the money to pay for the insurance I need to treat the injuries I sustain while playing paintball. One advantage is that we have a team medical staff that takes good care of us.
