My daughter wants to see and experience Los Angeles. She hasn't traveled much but this city is interesting to her. (I'd rather see San Fransisco again myself) I was reading about L.A. and found some interesting facts I thought I would share: The city was originally called El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles. Can you believe it? Looonnnnnggg name. In 1835 it became an official city and was actually named part of the U.S. in January of 1847. Beverly Hills actually began as a lima bean ranch. It wasn't actually incorporated into Los Angeles until 1914. Santa Monica Pier was built to protect a sewage pipe that dumped sewage into the ocean(OooH!)Nowadays it is famous for its restaurants, shops, fishing, and aquarium. Ugh! The average commuter spends 167 hours(or nearly 7 days) of traffic yearly. That doesn't include the time spent driving from one location to another. This is just the time setting in traffic. There are 75 miles of beach in Los Angeles County along its coastline. Griffith Park is a very popular park in and around Los Angeles. It is actually the largest city park in the U.S. It has 50 miles of hiking trails and 400 square feet of recreational area. One Last thing I found interesting. The La Brea Tar Pits, in urban Los Angeles is open for viewing. They have found over 3.5 million fossils to date( since 1913.) and the paleontologists dig nearly every day of the year.
