A determined little plant

The power of tiny plants never ceases to amaze me. I wrote recently about finding morel fungi in the mulch in our garden. Yesterday, I spotted this little morel growing up between the paving slabs at the side of the house. I guess the spore got there somehow and now it has established its own little place in the world. We have left all the morels to their own devices and hope that we might have more next year so we can try them for taste. And we delight in asking people if they have morels. And saying that we have. It's a play on words for those for whom English is a second language. I presume morals and morels are pronounced the same.

You always come up with something I have to look up in a dictionary. I love mushrooms but how can you tell if it's not poisonous?

Honestly, you should always get someone who has experience on edible fungi to look at what you've found and ask them if it's poisonous or not. (I've picked morels lots of times and what Judy has shown us are edible.)

We would have it checked out but enough people have told us about them for us to think they are okay.

@DaddyEvil Good advice Daddy Evil and, although we've been told they're the real McCoy, we'd still get it checked out somewhere.

I've noticed fungi growing between our brick paving too. I guess the main part (the mycelium) spreads over a large area underground but of course we only see the fruiting bodies which are just a tiny bit.

They do well, don't they, to find that little bit of dirt in which to grow. I loved this one which even managed to have a flower.

@Fleura My brother's paving has a green tinge all over it and if he doesn't do something soon the area will look more like a lawn than paving.

Are those edible morels? They are so expensive, I love them but I never buy because of the price. Morchelle is their name in Italian and Morilles in French.

@JudyEv Correct, we buy them dried, you keep in warm water a few hours to re-hydrate. We also buy dried porcini, that are also very good mushrooms.

@LadyDuck Unless they are really, REALLY expensive, I will have to buy a few just to try them.

I'm sure they are but we would have them checked. There is a Swiss couple who ride endurance and they told us what they were. They buy them dried apparently. I must research it one day - if I can buy them here.

Apparently they are very tasty but most found by foraging. Not easy to grow for marketing.

I love them. You can pick them. Shake them real good where they are and that will drop spores back down for next year.

I would have thought that in the big broad scale they are. When you get down to plants and animals but I could well be wrong.

It seems they should be pronounced differently. I don't think they are readily available in the stores as they aren't easy to cultivate.
