She will never learn

My Mom says she is computer illiterate and she is. The only thing she can do is send emails and respond to emails and forward them. She does play a game on Facebook and she will answer a few posts there But, Trying to teach her Facebook Messenger is fruitless. I have given her a couple of lessons and she will act like she learned something then she will forget it. I recently tried to explain to her how we could call or do Face Time on Facebook Messenger. She didn't understand it. It's sad because if she got it, she could communicate with her grandson much easier because that is all he uses . Do you have older relatives who don't understand simple computer apps?

Some elderly only love the traditional way of communicating and they dislike video calls or etc. When I see that, I try to soothe them by asking about their preference. If face to face communication and voice calls are sufficient for them, then I'll stick with that only.

I like your mother! My computer knowledge is also limited and I refuse to learn more than I need and want to use.

I remember the days when in college when my friends and I would write letters that we would send through the mail or we would call and talk on our land line phones. Times sure have changed.

My mother considers it unnecessary to have a computer even though it would allow her to do so much more. Instead, she has chosen to make her life needlessly more complicated by trying to do things the way they were done decades ago.

@LeaPea2417 I tried to introduce her to the wonderful world of the internet years ago, but it didn't take. She wasn't old at the time, but she has always been one to be a bit stuck in her ways.

My husband is like that. However, he's picked up how to use his new iPhone pretty quickly. If I knew it would be easier for him, I would've made the switch years ago.

My mother, if she were still alive, would be like your mother. I don’t think she’d be able to answer her phone

There are a few more technical things I don't understand , I am just glad I do comprehend the easier things.

Older relatives. Who? Me? I admit that I don't have a smartphone and barely know how to use my flip phone. I do know how to use messenger. Not Facetime. Oh well. Call me an older relative. Doesn't bug me.

That's true. It's harder for older people to learn new languages.

Not really, well my dad is out of it with computers even though he used to work on them when he was working. He has dementia so anything remotely techy is over his head. My mother though is pretty good with technology, and computers and ipads specifically.

Yes, I do... I sit with them and try to explain in such a way that they understand. They may be able to use the new apps for a little while but then forget again. It's sad but even I stop trying to explain things after a while.

@LeaPea2417 Sometimes things have to be explained to me more than once for me to understand. I do not always understand what I write down so have to ask over and over again. Give your Mom time and maybe repeating it over and over again she will eventually understand.

Yes I have it. If you are an old person, it is a bit difficult to catch it or remember it.
