Went to see my aunt! She's walking a little better, but still very slow and using a walker. She has Osteoarthritis in her knees. This is hard for her because she has always been so active exercising walking and swimming to keep in shape. She got cortisone shots but she can't get too many of those and the doc won't tell her too much else that can be done. I tell her ask about the knee brace. There are other treatments without knee replacement surgery. She needs a second opinion. But she somehow is refusing help and advice. We don't like to see her not walking. Have you tried to help a relative who is not open to suggestions? How do you do this? What do you think?

I call it stubbornness. Mom was like that and if she couldn't hear us talking she'd tell us to quit whispering, we weren't and when the mention of getting a hearing aid came up she told us it wasn't her it was us not speaking loud enough. After a while I just gave up. What's the point of trying to help someone who refuses to believe they need it.

I would give that person space. They know the help is avaible if it's needed, but at the end of the day it's still their choice to make.

@db20747 That's all you can do. She needs to make the choice, herself.

How old is she? If she's still at an age where many people are active it must be hard to feel you can't be part of that. I'm in my 70s and so lucky to have good health when I see people much younger than me struggling. Your aunt sounds like a little trooper!

@db20747 I am almost 71 and have very good health but I would be devastated if I couldn't get about as I walk a lot so I can understand her frustration.

She's 68! It's gotten much worse over the past year. She was walking with a cane and now hardly at all. There's so many things that can help her. But she has to take the meds her doctor prescribed. Hope she can get some type of physical therapy like electric massage. She is a trooper.

Aw this is very sad. I am sorry to hear it.
If she is refusing help well then maybe knee braces and massage is all I can think of.
I am sure she would not be up for acupuncture then.

Why can't she get the knee replacement surgery? She would be able to get around so much easier. Is it because of her age? I guess that would be understandable, but if not her age, she should really go for it.
