Bush Stone-Curlew - one of Australia's distinctive birds

Today we visited a wildlife park in Bunbury, Western Australia. In the twenty years, we lived in the area, we never visited but today we had some time to kill so off we went. I was intrigued by the three bush stone-curlews (Burhinus gallarius) that were in one of the walk-through enclosures. These quaint birds are endangered in some states. As you can see they have long, dainty legs and a strong, sharp beak. They are most active at night and have a distinctive eerie ‘scream’. The yellow eye is also quite distinctive. The eggs are laid in a shallow scrape with both birds sharing in the incubation and raising of the young. They eat a variety of plant and animal life. The habitat can vary from open woodland to savannah, dune scrub and forest and mangrove fringes. Their feathering ensures they blend well into native bush covering.

They look like a very old species. I hope they can protect them from extinction.

If they ever did a bush stone-curlew version of The Andy Griffith Show that one in the upper left would be Barney Fife. It’s interesting to see the one in the upper right sitting. His knees bend backward! And that is a beautiful color scheme. Thanks for sharing them with us!

That one with his knees bent backwards (seemingly) froze when we first entered the walk and we very nearly missed seeing him.

@judyev Aren’t these ground-dwelling but capable of flight? I’m supposing they are nothing to do with our curlews who captivate me down on the shore by Lissadell in county Sligo. I could wax lyrical.

Yes, they can fly but mostly rely on camouflage to stay safe. They 'freeze' when they think they've been spotted and blend in remarkably well.

@DaddyEvil He 'froze' when we first walked into the enclosure but once he saw we'd seen him, he got up and walked around.

Definitely a distinctive bird. It's interesting to know that both birds share the parental duty.

They are pretty birds in an awkward sort of way. There is something about them that reminds me of young chickens who are no longer fuzzy little chicks but are still a ways away from being proper adults.
