Day 138
Nehemiah 13:10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.
11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.
13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.
14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof. (KJV)
How do you want to be remembered? Do you want people to know the good things you did for them?
Nehemiah had gone back to Babylon and served King Artaxerxes again as he did before he went to Jerusalem to build the walls and temple. He gained permission to return to Jerusalem. When he returned, he found the people turned from God and didn’t take care of the priests and Levites with their tithes. He also found Tobiah instilled in a room in the temple. Nehemiah cast him out of the temple along with all his goods and instilled the priests and Levites in their offices again. When he did, he asked God to remember what he did.
As Christians, do you work for God, others, or self? Are you a leader or follower? As a leader, do you set the example in your walk with God? As a follower, do you wait for your leader to leave for other business, and let your walk with God deteriorate?
As long as Nehemiah was in Jerusalem, the people obeyed God and did what Nehemiah told them. They built the walls and the temple and committed themselves and their families to God. As soon as he returned to Babylon, they forsook God and took up with their enemies, allowing them a place among them.
When you allow Satan a place in your life, he will take up residence and cause you to become complacent in your walk with God. You need to keep your commitment to God, even when your leaders are absent. If you are a leader, you need to keep your commitment to God so people will see your devotion and know you will not allow Satan to have a foothold in your life.
God expects obedience and will not tolerate complacency. Complacency is Satan’s ally.
Psalm 37:3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those who wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
Let’s pray: Father, help me keep my commitment to You. Show me when Satan comes in with his schemes to cause complacency to shut down my walk with You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
