Ocean Tiara was describing using cones from her pine tree for protecting plants. I also have cones from pine trees. I decorate mine with sparkle and mount them as decorations during Christmas.
I also have an oak tree which drops acorns that sit in little cups. I remove the seed and replace it with a candle. these an be very pretty on a table at Christmas.
The wood they are mounted on was burned pine wood after a wild fire incident a few years ago.

In good time for Christmas. I haven't thought about new decorations yet this year. I may make some, we are still in lockdown so something crafty is a good way to use the time indoors.

@LadyDuck Watching Utube encourages us all to be creative. Crafts, recipes, news and information. How did we manage without it?

They have stayed looking good for a couple of years now. An economic decoration that only cost the price of the candles.

When Pretty was still young, I did all kinds of crafts like this to use in decorating our house for the holidays. After she graduated from High School, I asked if she wanted to help me decorate the house. She wasn't interested, so I haven't bothered anymore.

Those are very pretty! I love the cinnamon scented pine cones from Walmart. As many pine trees as we have, I should figure out how to decorate with them. Can't bring pine branches or live greenery in, though because we both have allergies.

If you stick with pine cones or weathered pieces of wood etc. they will stay perfectly well outside on a window sill or table.
