Samhain Poem

United Kingdom

OĆche Shamhna Shona Daoibh Happy Halloween Samhain blessings I don't think I ever gave this poem a title. It was originally written in 2013 and, for some reason, has never made it to my poetry blog or website (links to which are in my profile on here). I feel the poem could be expanded (it's quite possible I did expand it and it'll pop up in a memory somewhere, I'm not sure). Here it is, an old poem about the pagan celebration of Samhain: Blessed be, on this Samhain When life meets death And hopes remain Ancestors will walk among To celebrate With old and young To see the old year out, and then To welcome one more New Year in. ..... Did you enjoy that? Should I give it a proper title?

It is a nice poem but I have no idea of what Samhain means.

Samhain is one of the major pagan festivals, denoting the new year on the Wheel of the Year where summer ends and winter begins. It is the celebration in which modern day Hallowe'en and harvest festivals have their origins. The poem kind of says what it's about but, being a poem, doesn't explain in detail! Samhain is really a time of thanks, celebrating harvests and thanking ancestors who helped prepare arable land.

@pumpkinjam thank you for explaining this, many of our traditions have a pagan origin.

Don't strain yourself too much with the thinking Translated literally from modern Irish, Samhain actually means 'November' but is also translated as 'summer's end'.

@pumpkinjam Ah, that is right summer ends in November there. That sounds like October Rust. For when summer ends here. I hate when summer ends like the world gets more serious and to serious for me already.

It's good--give it a title---how would you like to go through life without a title?

I don't think I'd mind not having a title. It would mean nobody could address me so I don't have to speak to anyone. I'm not seeing a downside here

Yes, I enjoyed it. I don't think it needs a title.

I'm glad you enjoyed it I don't write many poems now. Perhaps I should, or maybe find a few other old ones to share here.
