I am feeling GUILTY with...

...one of my students online. It has been almost 100 teaching sessions with her and she seems not improving. When she speaks, it is like she's eating her words. I did all the necessary teaching methodologies to improve her speaking, but they are not effective. There is no problem with her reading word per word during the word drills. The only flaw is that she is like murmuring while reading the sentences or answering questions with complete sentences. Did you ever feel guilty and frustrated at the same time? So sorry to hear that you have students that don't seem to improve. It somehow reflects on you and her. Maybe you should consult with your superior what is the best approach to improve her speaking.

My superiors are not well-experienced like me in teaching online. It is a fact that cannot be denied. They are not good at this kind of concern. I think she is quite hardheaded when it comes to being corrected. She was being forced to learn a second language.

@Shavkat Too bad I guess you will have to contend or find some other methodology that may work with her. Thinking out of the box kind of methodology might work for her if the conventional ways are not working for her.

@rsa101 I think she needs a SPED teacher. She seems to be a slow young learner.

I think she needs to have a teacher who follows her personally and not online. She surely has a problem also speaking her own language.

I do agree with you. She needs to be studying with a foreign teacher as a one-on-one class offline. In China, it is difficult to find this teacher there.

@LadyDuck I hope she can help herself to improve without a teacher presence.

I don't think you should feel guilty. Some children have learning difficulties meaning that no matter how hard you try it may not work out

@Shavkat Sometimes the parents must also teach their kids. You can't put the whole burden on a teacher. It should be a shared responsibility

@Nawsheen You said it right. The teachers are only the second parents for their kids.

@Shavkat you say she is able to read and comprehend the reading perfectly? I would build her confidence by having her read more and talk less for a time.

You are a good person, don't be frustrated because of life's challenges, maybe it has become your destiny that must be passed, it will be difficult for you but believe me a big effort will find good results and keep praying for him.

I think it is not my fault. I had this notion that she needs to help herself. I did my part and kept on pushing her. It is up to her to spread her wings and do better.

Sounds like she is not confident bring that up where she is confident and bet she will be all good. It happens I would not be confident speaking Filipino. I have a hard enough time speaking English and I live here. I had that in Japan speaking their language and go think will just stick to English no one cared enough and knew was just a tiny stint off my life so everyone was like yeah its not really going to matter in long run for you.

@Shavkat Yeah its hard when you feel if you say the wrong thing you will get in trouble even if it is as simple as people laughing at you. Why teachers here the good ones anyway tell the other students do not laugh unless its meant to be funny.

@crossbones27 You will be fascinated if seeing the traditional Chinese kiddies. They are so passive and cannot relate to changes in time. Now, we are having a hard time because the Chinese government forbids young ones to learn the English language aged 12 and below.

She did hold back a couple of times. I guess you are right that she is not that confident. I think she is carrying out the manner of learning in a classroom-type in China. They tend to be passive.

It can be very hard for a person to learn how to pronounce words in a language they do not know.

It is easier for very young children to learn a new language than it is for older kids.

She is a teenager now. At her age, she can do the pronunciation of the English words. But then, she needs to enunciate the words in making sentences aloud.

I do agree that it is best to learn offline. For these Chinese students, it is more effective to learn the second language speaking online. Why? It is hard for them to practice speaking with their own kind in China.

I also considered the point that she is living in the countryside and the culture is too strong to be a bit shy when having classes with a teacher. I gave up asking her not to hold back when answering questions verbally because it is always the same response.
