Day 150 Psalm 5:1 (To the chief Musician upon Nehiloth, A Psalm of David.) Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. 2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. 3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. 4 For thou art not a God who hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. 5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: you hate all workers of iniquity. 6 Thou shalt destroy them who speak falsely: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man. 7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple. 8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face. 9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is wickedness; their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue. 10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee. 11 But let all those who put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because you defend them: let them also who love thy name be joyful in thee. 12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield. What causes you to pray? Do you long for justice against those who come against you? Do you defend yourself before God? Do you worship Him? David wanted God to hear his prayer. He showed how God hated wickedness and destroyed deceitful people. David put forth his cause in defending his reasons why God should destroy his enemies. He also showed that God would reward the righteous and defend them. As Christians, do you pay attention to how you pray? In these verses, you can see five parts to David’s prayer. 1. He wanted God to hear him and consider his meditation. His prayer would only be to God. God would hear him in the morning. 2. David showed God has no pleasure in wickedness. Sin, foolishness, and those who practice sin have no place in God’s sight. 3. David then turned his prayer to himself. He told God he would go into His house and worship Him. In the multitude of His mercy, he would reverence Him. He asked God to lead him in His righteousness against his enemies and make his path straight. 4. David then gave his reason why God should come against his enemies. Everything they did showed their unfaithfulness to God, even in the flattery of their mouth. 5. David ended his prayer by showing God’s faithfulness to all those who put their trust in Him. Prayer is a strategy against your enemy, Satan. When you go to God in prayer, you need to focus on God’s sovereignty, not on your selfish desire for justice. David put forth all his reasons why God should defend him against his enemies. What are your reasons why God should defend you? Your most important reason is your relationship with Jesus Christ. When you pray in Jesus’ name, He hears you. John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. Do your prayers bring glory to God? David worshiped God when he prayed. Do you? Or are your prayers focused on your problems as you tell God He needs to destroy your enemies. David didn’t tell God to destroy his enemies. He gave God reasons why He should, their unfaithfulness to Him. He showed God the kind of people they were in their foolish actions. David showed God his faithfulness to Him and his longing to go into His house to worship Him. David’s prayer brought glory to God. That’s why God defended David and went ahead of him into battle. Your battle starts on your knees. When you humble yourself and ask God to hear you when you pray because of your faithfulness to Him, He will listen. You have His attention. Let’s pray: Father, I come before You, asking that You hear me because I am Your child through the blood of Your Son, Jesus. You know my heart. You know how selfish I am. Help me focus on You and Your faithfulness. Fill me with Your desire as I come to You with my requests. Satan does his best to destroy me and my faith in You. Defend me as You lead me in Your righteousness. Let me delight in Your salvation as I trust in You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
