The Way Time Moves

Eugene, Oregon
November 9, 2021 4:46pm CST
Yes, most of us agree that it moves very fast, but since I retired, the days sort of flow into each other. For instance, our trash pickup is on Wednesday, but every Tuesday as I gather the trash and the recycling to put out for pickup, it seems that I did it about three days ago, not seven days. Funny, but since my time is not really structured like it was when I worked, it seems different. Friday was a day to look forward to, and then the weekend flew by. So, the concept of time seems to shift depending on how we spend it. If you are working, is Friday still a big day for you? Or maybe your Friday comes on Wednesday. If you don't work, does the the way time moves feel different?

Do not tell me, I have the feeling that it is always Thursday and that it's grocery shopping day. Times flies when we age.

@JamesHxstatic We have two days a week when the fruits and vegetables arrive fresh from Spain and Italy and are on the shelves Tuesday morning and Thursday morning. I prefer to go out on Thursdays.

Ah Yes, @LadyDuck. I sort of shop when I need to do so it seems. My schedules are loose.

When I had a regular job I always looked forward to the weekends. Now they just seem kind of boring

I can't keep track of the days anymore... I find myself checking my phone for the day of the week now. Every day seems the same.

I can understand. During the lockdown when I didn't work I forgot days and dates.

I can relate to what you are saying since time does change. Friday is one my favorite days due to the huge success I have had doing surveys.

I feel like a month is a week and a week is 3 days like you. I wonder if I have become slow.

I'm a stay at home mom . . . Monday through Friday are run around days with school routines . . . so it is a relief to finally get to those Fridays. But then the weekends, even if Hubby is off from work, it's a different kind of run around . I will say at the beginning of the pandemic when we were all at home, it was rather nice to not be so time structured.

I'm sure it was. I know how things are with kids and school.

my husband is simi-retired, and I set my own schedule for work. So, for me the days flow together, and the only "structure" there is, is based on when we go out, or when I do the laundry. With two people, I end up doing laundry twice a week.

There are two of us and I do the laundry mostly (since Anne's cancer treatment started). I do about four loads a week it seems,

Mine are mostly too, but it seems that weekly trash day happens every three days.

Time for me moves quite quickly with every day writing job searches and hoping to make a permanent writing match, I do as much as I can on the sites I post on and I can tell you it makes me smile when I get messages from Medium which pays through a site called Stripe and they inform me that I will be getting 4 cents from reads, But I still say every penny counts,

I feel the same way about trash pickup days. I also noticed that I fill my pill container once a week but it seems as if I'm always ready for a refill. I didn't think being retired would make such a difference but it certainly does. Now I enjoy weekends because my daughter has off from work so we do our errands and such like we used to when i worked.

@Marilynda1225 I read once that something begins changing at around age 30 and our concept of time begins to speed up.

My wife does her pill container on Sunday and that reminds me of the day.

I feel exactly the same about the trash. It's also one of the only ways I can keep track of what day it is.

I use to work three day weekends, every week. My days off were during the week. Weekends weren't set aside for fun. Now, since Jay retired it's like every day is the same, yet weeks flow by at a rapid pace, as you just mentioned. Sunday seems different, to me.

Interesting. By the way, have you ever looked at Vocal.com? @RasmaSandra mentioned it and I have been looking at it.

Since I'm waiting to be able to move out of an apartment that I can't stand, time seems to creep along. It has taken on the sort of feeling that school days used to have--waiting for the final bell so I can escape a place I don't want to be.

@JamesHxstatic I have a date for when we're supposed to move, but there are still a few things that are a bit muddled. Once we've the keys in hand and I'm physically putting stuff into the new place, I will feel a lot more certain of things.

I can definitely imagine that in retirement time goes by very differently. Even on the occasion when I have taken a year or two off between jobs, time moves very differently than when I am working, and days sort of have less meaning if you know what I mean.
