The upside of being ill

I have been quite ill for over a week but am starting to improve now after a course of antibiotics. Vince has been very attentive but I think he has a button which automatically activates when he sees me. It makes him say ‘What are you doing out of bed?’ Being ill has had its upside though. He can now stack the dishwasher and run it. Sometimes he even manages to remember to unload it! He can operate the washing machine and knows not to put dark things in with light clothes. His pegging out leaves a bit to be desired but I’m not going to complain about a small thing like that. He has supplied appetising, small meals and brought me countless cups of water when I needed them. I think I have a keeper. The photo is of him in his first car. I think he was trying to turn it over. Luckily, he failed.

I wonder what my husband would do should I be sick. One thing is sure, he would go immediately in panic mode. Vince is doing pretty well.

@JudyEv What is weird, is the fact that my husband lived alone before we got married. Of course it's 50 years that he does not cook, do the laundry and clean the house. I know, I have to blame myself.

@LadyDuck Viince has no idea where anything is but of course you can't blame him because, like your husband, he hasn't had to do much for himself since he got married. He is a bit more cluey now!!

I know some men really don't know what to do if their wife becomes ill. I'm really lucky to have such good care when I'm sick.

Thanks and I'm pleased to say I'm definitely on the mend now. I don't get ill very often but I really felt terrible this time around. My sister-in-law says she has several friends who have been much the same so I guess it's just a bug.

I started to say something about how old that car looks but decided that wouldn't be polite. I am happy he's taking such good care of you. Pretty wasn't feeling well a few days ago and acted shocked when I ask if I could make her something to eat... I cook for both of us all the time. I don't know why she was shocked by my offer.

@JudyEv Oh, wow! I'm sure a lot of people would have tried that if they were in similar circumstances! I've never seen anyone drive a car with a hand throttle.

@DaddyEvil I don't suppose they make them with hand throttles nowadays.

I think it is a 1947 Hillman. It had a hand throttle and a sun roof. He used to put the hand throttle on, sit on the back of the seat with his head out the roof and steer with his feet.

@CarolDM That's one reason we've moved here Hopefully we'll make lots of friends within the complex who might notice if, when we're on our own, we're missing for too long.

@JudyEv Work in progress..I won't tell you what friend did the other day. He's hopeless! He can't even make coffee without spilling it or overloading the basket. He can only be entrusted with safe delivery.

My husband is trained to bring in takeaway if I'm not feeling well. If he is left to running the household for a longer period of time, he can manage frozen foods without burning the place down. He isn't very good at cleaning up after himself, unfortunately. Even under normal circumstances, he tends to leave a trail of debris in his wake. It's like there is some bit of his brain that does not say to put things into the trash or recycling rather than on the counter.

It was very old and not very fast not that that would have helped perhaps. But the fast, modern cars are, I think, more dangerous.

I'm glad you are getting better @JudyEv! I have become quite a caretaker over the period of this year with Anne's cancer treatment. I sometimes do two loads of laundry in a day and mop the floor as well.

Pegging out is hanging out the clothes on a clothes line with pegs. We rarely need to use dryers here with our weather. And, incidentally, to peg out can mean to die.

As long as he doesn't forget all these skills. Can people develop the odd migraine at 75? Just so I can help him keep his hand in.
