Is this spam?

I received an email last night from UPS. It said my package is arriving tomorrow (which is today). It gave me an estimated delivery date and time—Wednesday, November 17, 2021 by 7 pm. There was a tracking number and it said UPS Ground above it. I did not order anything that’s supposed to ship to me and am not expecting a package from anyone. The order I made yesterday for my mom, is still being processed and hasn’t even shipped to her yet. And it won’t even ship via UPS. That place usually ships with FEDEX. Thought this was spam. Checked the actual email of the sender and it is from UPS, not some crazy email you can’t understand. Decided to see if this tracking number is legit. There was a thing to press in the email to track the package but to be safe I decided to go to their website directly and enter the tracking number there. The tracking number exists. Says the delivery date will be provided as soon as possible. Ship to says Staten Island, NY, which is where I live. Doesn’t say that the package has shipped and is on its way but it says that the label has been created. This doesn’t sound right... Spam or not? And should I ignore it?

Hmm could it be a free sample you applied for somewhere?

@RebeccasFarm LOL all is well. The stuff I ordered for my mom was processed and shipped quicker than I thought. And it was done via UPS instead of FEDEX. And it should come to her today. It is out for delivery. So that email was not spam after all.

I do not apply for free samples so can’t be that.

That sure does sound like one of their legitimate shipping notification emails. They send them out for any package coming to you, so maybe it's something a friend decided to send rather than something you ordered? I guess you probably don't have to do anything aside from wait and see if it shows up as estimated... hopefully the label gives some idea of what it is!

I wonder if the email had an estimated delivery date as November 17th how come on the site when I enter the tracking number it doesn’t tell me that...

@lovebuglena Their tracking has been a bit wonky for the last week or so. I had a package from Petco that had an estimated delivery date of Friday the 12th and it kept getting pushed back until yesterday when they passed it off to USPS for delivery. Another one from Amazon was never shown as picked up and seemed to vanish for a couple days until it showed up as out for delivery. It has to have something to do with the increased shipping volume for the holidays, I think. Their site should in theory be the most accurate when it comes to the tracking information but that doesn't always happen.

@yukimori I received another email from UPS. The second one told me the delivery was rescheduled from yesterday to today. This is, in fact, for the item I ordered for my mom.

As long as it doesn't ask you to send money to receive it, I'd just ignore it.

@Nawsheen The package will come today. It is what I bought online for my mom. I just didn't expect it to be shipped so fast or by UPS.

Sounds fishy to me. I would take down the tracking number and call directly to UPS. I get a lot of these in my text messages but none in my email you can never be sure these days. Yeah I’d give them a call they might be able to provide more information directly from calling them.

Turns out it was a legit email and it was for an item I ordered. It just shipped via UPS instead of FEDEX and the order was processed faster than happened with previous orders from the same site. The item delivery was rescheduled from yesterday to today. Should arrive by the end of the day.

So it is spam? If it is, what’s the point of someone doing that? The sender is clearly ups.
