Parent email

I spent a lot of time today emailing the parents of all of the students I have that failed for the marking period. I have the lowest level so there are a lot of them. Anyway I did get a couple of replies and one of them was a real doozy. It started with a condescending opening and concluded with this: "What is your plan to reach (student) more effectively so that he experiences increased motivation to perform in your class?" Are you kidding me? Your son failed 2 classes and got a D in 2 others and now it is on me to come up with a plan to motivate him? How about you give consequences for your son's refusal to do work? (work that he was given plenty of time to complete in class) Take away the XBox? Take away the cell phone? Ground him? Maybe check the online grading program throughout the marking period to see what his grades are? I know, I know. Those are some revolutionary ideas. I showed the email to a coworker and we had a good laugh about it.

Too many people want something for nothing. Just like with dogs, you want a result and are not willing to work for it.

I love how she is trying to make it my fault that the kid does almost nothing.

Didn't you know, to some parents, if a child fails it's your fault, not theres because when they're in school they're your responsibility? Note: being sarcastic here. Parents who can't be bothered to parent should never have had kids.

I guess it wouldn't help anything if you responded with "I don't plan on doing sh*t! That's your job!"

@NJChicaa Oh, I understand... What we say isn't always what we think... I'm often surprised at how some people think.

My reply was a bit more diplomatic but that is pretty much what I was thinking.

How ironic, I emailed a teacher today. Not you, but a teacher nontheless.

I'm always cool with parents reaching out to me or responding. That was just nuts though.

@thislittlepennyearns As long as parents and teachers are reasonable everything can be made/caught up.

It's really a shame that these kids don't have the motivation to work in school. It will be to their detriment in later life.
