A sweet keepsake from my aunt

After my uncle Asa passed away recently, his sons asked if I wanted anything that belonged to their mama who died a few years ago. I picked out this cute little ceramic cabbage bowl and a few other things that belonged to her. Aunt Fannie grew up very poor, the youngest of about ten siblings, I think. She had to help cook for her large family and years later we'd joke that she never learned to cook for just four people. Of course, several of us reaped the delicious reward from that. Many times she would call me at work and say, "Stop by on your way home. I've got your dinner ready." And oh, what a cook she was! Chicken and pastry (dumplins), coconut pie, and fish were just a few things we enjoyed. Her sweet tea was legendary in our neighborhood. What sweet memories of a very special lady.

I understand how difficult it can be for people who always cooked for a large family to adjust when the size of the family gets smaller. Mom cooked for 16 kids plus herself and dad... When it got down to mom, my youngest brother and I, my brother and I had to take over kitchen duties unless we wanted to eat the same thing for a week at every meal. The bowl is a nice keepsake.

@DaddyEvil He'd probably never heard of three sets of twins in one family.

You totally understand! My aunt actually had three sets of twin siblings, so I'm thinking she probably had more siblings than I remember. Her doctor didn't believe her about the three sets of twins, but she proved it to him, lol.

That bowl is pretty. I brought home several things from my Mom's apartment. I know that I do not need them, but those are memories.

@1creekgirl There are some little things that I know my mother loved, I do not use them, but they remind her.

Another thing they gave me was really what I wanted, a small stone pottery container to hold spatulas, etc that has "Fannie's Kitchen" on the front.

I already smile when I look at it. She was a down to earth country woman, but so special.

I love that bowl! My grandmother had a very cool house that was FULL of antiques. She would always ask us what we all wanted when she was gone and said she'd put our name on the stuff. I told her I wanted this cool multicolored leather hassock and the chaise lounge she had in her bedroom. My aunts gave me the hassock but not the chaise. haha
