Two Nights Later, Another Store, An Incident

Eugene, Oregon
November 20, 2021 5:53pm CST
So I went to a supermarket one parking lot away from that Walmart store with all the eggs two evenings later. It was about five, completely dark already. We needed some Ricotta cheese to prepare lasagna. I had completed my purchase, headed toward the door and heard a commotion outside. The people in front of me stopped at the door. A store detective, one of those guys who watches people from what look like mirrors up above the floor, had followed a man out the door and told him to come back in the store because he had stolen some merchandise. There was a short struggle and the store detective ended up on the pavement. The culprit got away. The manager ran out to help his employee up and they brought him into the store looking like he lost a fight. His face was a bit bloody and he was complaining about a sore neck. He wasn't a big guy, but looked stocky and strong. The other guy was meaner, I guess. That was a surprising thing to see. I wonder if the thief needed food for his family or maybe lifted a jug of wine. Either way, it was stealing. I suppose they reported the problem to the police and maybe had a license number. Prices have gone up, but stealing is risky. Have you ever witnessed an arrest or a struggle like that?

I haven’t witnessed anything like that. I once went to the bank and the door was locked so I drove away. Later I heard on the news that a bank robbery was going on when I was there, I Surely was glad I’d driven away instead of waiting.

@JamesHxstatic yes they sure are but I guess some people just don't think of the consequences of getting caught.

Thankfully I have not but then I rarely go shopping after dark. I hope they caught the thief and if was food he stole because he needed it then hopefully they'll only charge him with assault, there's no reason for harming someone.

Right, I guess he just didn't want to pay the consequences.

I have seen things like that before, but not in a store. I even participated in a few when I served as a military policeman.

@JamesHxstatic As a regular Walmart associate, I was told never to try to apprehend someone or I could lose my job.

@JamesHxstatic that is terribly wrong of them. I get what I can afford and then exist with what I have,

@RasmaSandra Some people are addicted to shoplifting. It gives them a thrill and becomes a psychological need.

A little different situation than yours, but at Walmart too. Saw Police car outside of entrance of Walmart, as I was entering store. Saw Police in store, is all. Near by, CVS, as I was at the cashier to paying, cashiers yelling stop him. As I glanced up to wonder what was happening, a tall young man was briskly walking out with packages of food & a drink. I opened my eyes wide, the cashiers began talking, he always does that! After that incident, I've been seeing Security at CVS.

Wow, "he always does that?" I wonder how many times he got away with it? I heard that CVS will close 900 stores over the next few years, by the way.

@JamesHxstatic Wow, that's sad. I'm hoping mine stays open, for they accept United Healthcare's otc benefits card. I only know of that time, I didn't inquire about it.

No, I have been fortunate to not be around when things like that happen. I have seen people pass out in a store, and I have seen a seizure, and I have seen a fire damping system get triggered by an electrical short and the fire department show up. Also some false fire alarms. All of that is plenty of excitement for me.

Not really but one time I saw a guy who tried to knock off a 7/11 outside in cuffs on the sidewalk. I also was in the area when someone had just stolen a truck. That was out West actually. One time too, I saw a guy running down the hill away from Costco. Apparently he had just stolen some jewelry. I am pretty sure he was apprehended. There really wasn't anywhere to go, not without risking your life in traffic.

@JamesHxstatic It was in broad daylight..when I first saw the guy, I was thinking what the heck is he doing? When I got into Costco, I heard about it. I should have told them I saw him running away..if it had gone to court, I could have been a witness. However, knowing Costco, I am sure they had plenty.

I haven't till now, but if I do might go in to help the detective like in this case. Because if there would have been some help the culprit might not have fleed away and the detective might also no have got hurt.

There is always risk in that kind of action in the US. The culprit might be armed and if he is innocent, he can end up suing the store and anyone else involved.

In difficult times like this pandemic, more and more people are in trouble and sometimes they think recklessly in an abnormal way to get money or food, we don't know the reason they steal but it's still wrong and harms people.

As an activist I saw plenty of fighting and blood--I once had my head hit with a policeman's wand--never forgot it nor have I ever forgiven that policeman as it wasn't necessary!
