Happiness

Some people make the mistake of believing that happiness is a place. They hardly comprehend that it is a state of mind. They think that happiness is having a whole lot of material things. They do not realize that having without enjoying will simply amount to pains of frustration. There are those who have all that money can buy but are tremendously unhappy. There are those who are deeply satisfied by very little things. Somehow they have come to terms with themselves. I remember when I lived with a religious community in Germany, I had little. I had no real desire to accummulate things. I had no use for them. I was satisfied with a few amenities at my disposal. I threw myself into my work. That was my joy, my happiness.

You had a wonderful experience doing without worldly items. I have been this way most of my life ..it is deeply satisfying as I know I can pick up and go at any time.

The satisfying thing is knowing your purpose in life.

I think that happiness is a state of our heart, rather than one of our mind. Our mind can choose to go with our heart, but it can't know real happiness on its own. Can we choose to be happy, just with our minds, then? No, we must live from the happiness in our hearts. What is happiness? What part of us would really make this choice, to be happy, if it is a choice, that is? If our mind chooses to be happy, would it then follow that we would become emotionally happy, enthusiastically alive etc. etc. too? Happiness is not a choice at its basest level, but it is a choice to move away from it, and if you have done so, it then becomes a choice to move back to it, or at least to examine, and to remove the wrong choices that have led you away from the happiness that always resides in your heart, a part of the love that God placed there when he created you as you.
