Do we really have to choose between being among the exploiters and the exploited?

I thought I could lead a noble and moral life and still make enough to survive. But I may have been wrong. I went to my bank today so I could transfer some funds to pay rent for this month. Internet and phone communications had failed. Nobody there could help me. The nice Indian ladies behind the counter seemed befuddled. I decided to try the phone again. I have never been late with rent. I have been on hold for half-an-hour now. and am listening to some pretty obnoxious music. This may be the last straw. But where can I put what I've earned over the years and know that it's safe? I have no idea. Have you ever been unable to access your own money? If you are an idealist, like me, what would it take for you to venture to "the other side"?

In your case I would complain to all who would listen, black list that bank and if you have seen those movies where someone stands in the bank and shouts they won't give me my money and suddenly there is a run on the bank, Well that is rather extreme but man oh man do I hate your bank even just reading what you are going through,

As I went to the other side when it comes to dealing with sh*t a long time ago. I would change banks very soon.

@TheHorse I am with a small local bank and they are all very friendly and helpful. But I have never had a big problem either. Ask around and maybe even stop in at different ones to talk to managers. If they wont make time for you then you know they wont want to help if it is needed.

Yes. I missed out on TCS public issue because of it. You bet I was mad. I am still mad. That share has done so well. I would be really rich.

@TheHorse Tata Consultancy Services Limited (a software company). It came up with public issue, around the time when my funds were blocked in Global Trust Bank - in some scam. 17 years ago, it issued shares at 850 INR. Today that share would be worth 28000 INR.

I've never had a problem accessing my own money. Sure, the app has been down. but that's one thing. I have been able to access it at a later time.

It sounds as if they suspect you of some kind of bank fraud, when you are the victim.

@JamesHxstatic You have got me looking into Credit Unions. I know my exposure is only $200,000.00, but to me, as a glorified social worker, that is a lot of money.

Don't you have a friend's place where you can go and do some account transfer using some kind of a mobile App or Website? If the bank is giving so many hassles, may be you can open an account in another bank. Also, we have a Banking Ombudsman which listens to the complaints against banks. Maybe you also have a similar arrangement there?

Call your landlord. Explain to him/her what happened. As you’ve never been late with rent, it should be no problem (as opposed to the people who are never on time). And call the people who regulate banks. And the corporate office of your bank.

I never experienced to be unable to access my money. Should Internet fail, I go to the bank (20 minutes walk) and a kind employee would give me what I need or provide to transfer the money where I ask.

I am so sorry you're going through all this. There's no excuse for the way your bank is tormenting you. I would throw the biggest tantrum, short of getting arresting for being a domestic terrorist. I would contact the AG, the head of your bank, and everyone else I could think of. They cashed your check, they are in the wrong, you are not.

Ultimately, they are responsible. Was it an "inside job"? Who would cash a "third party check" without checking with the person who wrote the check and the intended recipient?

Surprising even a personal visit came to naught to resolving this vexatious issue. The bank cannot make you run from pillar to post.

@TheHorse You can try naming them on Twitter or Facebook. Sometimes such things now work in India and may be US too?? Now a days, many companies- even Government owned do not like mudslinging on social media so they respond there. Or may be you can call Joe Biden when he is sleeping??

Funny thing. I used to work as a bank teller. At that time computers was sort of new. A lot of our customers were retired and received social security checks, automatic deposit. It almost never failed that the first of the month when the checks were supposed to hit the accounts, our computer system would CRASH! So we could not check the customer's account to verify if they had received their money. Talk about angry customers! We still got computer print outs that would show the customer's name, account number, and deposit from the previous month. The branch manager decided to work around the computer failure, just check to see if the customer had a deposit on record from the previous month. Then tell them they could take out that amount. He figured the computer system would come back up and the deposits would be there, After all, it's the federal government! But yeah. It is very annoying when you can't access your own money because of the computer. In most cases, they usually get it fixed. But it can cause you problems, especially when a bill has to be paid by a particular date.

I have once. My debit card had expired. I thought they automatically sent you a new one when it gets near the expiration date, but they don't. The debit card was in my uncle's name (my uncle handled my money) so I had to get him to call for a new one. Also I couldn't access my account info because I messed up the pin number. I finally got to go the bank and got my password changed. The man at the bank was nice.
