Advent is here!

When I was a child I never had an Advent calendar. I think that was something to do with belonging to the local Methodist chapel. Or maybe people just couldn’t afford to buy Advent calendars, I don’t remember any other children ever mentioning such a thing.
When Big One was little Advent became more of a ‘thing’, possibly because our local school is a Church of England school. To start with she had a card Advent calendar with little doors that opened to reveal pictures from the Bible story. But somewhere along the way chocolate calendars got introduced - nothing at all to do with the Christmas story any more, but just 24 little over-packaged chocolates with a few pictures of Father Christmas and reindeer and such.
So after a few years of this we got fed-up with the amount of packaging we were buying and throwing away. OK so these days much of our waste is allegedly recycled and our non-recyclable waste gets incinerated to produce energy, but it still irked us. So I decided to get the girls ‘everlasting’ Advent calendars.
These fabric ones have pockets for you to pop in whatever you want, and they will be re-used every year. You can buy them ready-made, but I bought them the ‘make-your-own’ version, which basically comes on one printed panel like a large tea-towel so you cut out the pockets and sew them on yourself.
This is the one Little One has made. I hope it will last for many years.

I have never bothered with an Advent Calendar, but for a change I got my friend, in LA, a tea Advent. You got a different blend of tea each each day. Wish I'd gotten myself one, as it looked very enticing. I am expecting daily reports on each day, needless to say!

I've never heard of anything like that. I hope your daughters enjoy them.

@Fleura I've never heard of Advent, Advent calendars or make-your-own calendars.

@fleura Advent calenders are a manufacturer's dream - all package and no content. My mother made our children a fabric one that was full of interest and told another bit of the Christmas story with each window and there were a few elves and reindeer and snow flakes as well. It really was a thing of beauty and no chocolate in sight but the kids loved opening the windows each day even though no Santas popped out. My wife was a Methodist till she married me, but is still at heart.

I have never seen the Advent Calendar. Those ones seem not to be a patch on your version of it

I've known about Advent calendars for years, but never had one or wanted one. The one Little One made is precious and will last for many years even into her adulthood and will bring many cherished memories as the years go by. It makes me want to get an Advent calendar.

That's wonderful. That can be used over and over again. And can last for years. That's thoughtful. We have to think of ways to throw less in the environment.
