Self-Driving Cars

There is a commercial airing on TV right now for the GMC Denali which is a self-driving car. As the car moves along the road and changes lanes, the occupants, including the driver, clap along to "We Will Rock You" by Queen. The driver never touches the steering wheel.
How do you feel about self-driving cars?
I think they are an accident waiting to happen. Which one of the many computer systems onboard will fail first? What little glitch will cause the car to crash? I'd be interested in hearing your opinions.

I like mine and that’s as far as I want to go. Mine has lane-keeping assist, which will keep the car in the lane. After ten seconds it’ll beep that I have to steer the car (even if I am steering the car). The ten seconds gives me time to gawk at the scenery.

@LindaOHio — I promise, it took me a while to trust it. It was one of those things like checking the alignment in your car (take your hands off the wheel but have them just above the wheel so you can grab it quickly).

Interesting. I would have trouble trusting it.

@LindaOHio We also have lane-keeping assist, but my husband drives, the car beeps if he cross the lane, or if he speeds too much.

Four Walls likes hers; but I wouldn't trust a driverless car.

We had a news here a few years ago that the driver couldn't stop because there was a problem with the automatic driving of the car

I think if you are on a road by yourself, it's fine but with other cars, I'm not convinced.

I would have my hands on the steering wheel the whole time anyway!

They might be the latest thing coming but I still would not trust my life to a self-driving car

My daughter's car practically drives itself now, with the only exception is that you have to keep pressure on the steering wheel. I've driven it on a 5-hour road trip where I basically just had my thumb on the wheel with just enough pressure for the car to register my "grip." It did all the rest of the driving.
I have no issues with self-driving cars. Their safety record couldn't possibly be any worse than the safety record of human drivers who are drunk, high, texting, putting on makeup, arguing, and whatever else takes their concentration off the road.

@LindaOHio And that’s the way it should be. Call it the manual backup system! Lol

You make all valid points; but I would have a tight grip on the steering wheel just in case!

I would not feel comfortable being in the car that is driving itself. But then again I've been in an air tram (not sure if correct word) to get from the airport parking lot to the airport terminal. And that one doesn't have a conductor.

@lovebuglena I have great anxiety when my husband drives; and I don't relax until we are at our destination.

That would make me nervous too. I can't imagine being on a highway at 70 mph in a driverless car!

Technology can give you 99% result but then you still have 1% chances that glitch may occur.
If I can take a small nap while going to my Home Town which generally took 9 hours of driving then it would be a relief. But then these cars should support in Indian roads too.

@LindaOHio You know when I was arguing about vaccination - I was told by my elderly that - "What-if" will not let you live your life.

You make a good point. I'm always slow to accept the latest technology. A major deterrent is the cost! But as much as I dislike driving, I think I'd rather do it myself until all the bugs are worked out of the vehicle. I do like the parallel parking features on those cars though.

Yes, the parallel parking feature would be helpful since I haven't parallel parked since my driving test eons ago.

@LindaOHio I remember practicing that over and over for my driver's test. When it came time to do it I nailed it perfectly

ah, in my wheelhouse today!
1. ~80% of all car accidents are rear-end collisions. Driverless cars reduce that by 80% or more. That means car insurance rates go down, for everyone!
2. Human response time, is much slower than machine response time. that could further reduce accidents and make driving safer.
3. Driverless cars, DON'T HAVE HUMAN's Driving, which reduces the risk for everyone. They don't cut you off on the highway. THey don't fly into road rage and shot you.
