Please Bring Your Pets Inside

Please, please, please don't leave your pets outside when it gets really cold. Your pets need to be either in your home, the garage or at very least in a barn or some other type of enclosure. When they show those ASPCA commercials on TV with dogs shivering in the cold, I wish I could take every one of them inside my home, wrap them in a blanket and never let them be cold again. Years ago I reported a neighbor across the street that kept his dog chained up outside in the summer and winter without a dog house. That poor dog was in the heat, the cold and the rain with no protection. Very soon after my report, he had a dog house. Well, it's better than nothing! How do you feel about this? Do you chain your dogs up outside in the cold or intense heat? Photo Credit: Pixabay

@DocAndersen Good for you! People that leave pets and children in hot cars should have the same done to them, along with being charged for a crime.

@LindaOHio i have a device in my car now, that can easily break a window. I have used it 4 times, to get a dog out of a hot car. then animal control and let the owner deal with their stupid act.

My dogs are never on a chain unless I am close by. But I do go by the breed of the dog. I had a pair of huskies that loved to sleep in the snow. They only went in buildings to get away from the summer heat. Livestock dogs prefer to take the weather also as they have been bred to do that.

Well, you know your own dogs. We prefer to have inside dogs. Just a preference.

@LindaOHio The 3 I have now are house dogs. But I have been thinking about getting a collie for outside. It will be raised with the livestock if I do. I would not put my dobermans outside in the extreme cold we get here as they dont have the extra undercoat that does the insulating. When it gets down in the teens they go potty and run back to the door.

@wolfgirl569 When we had the Pomeranians, Ice would go outside, stay out too long and come in shivering. I'd have to wrap him in a blanket to warm him up. :-)

I’ve seen dogs left in cars with the windows closed when it’s very hot outside. And the cars are not even on.

I agree. I can't even contain myself when I think about dogs that have spent their lives like that.

If one wouldn't afford comfortable living for an animal, better not have one !! You did well reporting that neighbor !!

This is a sad thing - neglect - let me tell you, I've seen serious neglect when I was a groomer. Incredible how bad some people will let it get. Is that your little pup?! What a cutie I don't have any pets anymore - used to have a little poodle guy - he was so sweet, and wonderful to groom. His coat was soft but had really nice body and he was adorable in a 'Town and Country' clip

I feel sorry for the dog if i have a dog I want to make sure they have a shelter, if not in the house, a small dog house for them.

Yes, I'm amazed at how badly some people treat their pets. They don't deserve to have them.

Preach it, sister! I couldn’t stand to have my babies out in the cold for the 30 seconds it took them to pee! They were indoor babies! When my allergist told me to get rid of them I told him I’d get rid of him first.

It is not so cold here, but I bought a cat house that I heat for the cat we adopted. The house is under the porch, warm and protected. I tried to keep the cat inside, he does not want.

@LindaOHio We have some nights below 32 F, but the days are almost always warmer. The cat likes his house. When I open the door at 6 in the morning, he looks outside and comes inside to have his breakfast.

It can be below zero for days at a time. Much too cold here for pets to be outside! A heated cat house is very nice!

I also think that is cruel behavior. Depending on the weather Coal sleeps either in the laundry room or her doghouse. She prefers to be in her yard most of the time. We have cedar chips in her dog house .

There have been warnings here about not letting your dog's paws get burnt on hot pavement. Dogs should be walked either early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the pavement has cooled down.
