I am sure we all heard of the saying "We cannot win them all." In the case of Stanley North Carolina Police Officer Matthew Curfman who did his best to assist his best to risk his life to rescue a 90 year old woman and her 71 year old daughter who were trapped inside of a burning home one day before Halloween. The sad part of the attempted rescue is that both women who names were not released since their relatives want privacy passed away from their injuries in a hospital. However the relatives of the deceased thank Officer Curfman and a volunteer firefighter for making an effort to get them out of the burning home by working as a team that morning. Stanley Police Chief Derek Summey award his brave police officer with a medal of honor for his efforts to rescue the two women from a burning home since it is in the oath that police officers take to serve and protect their communities. In the words of former Chicago Bears football coach George Halas "No one who ever gave it his best ever regretted it."

The same feeling I have that despite the best efforts of the police and firefighters to save the lives of the couple. It fell short.

The officer did earn his award since he risked his life to get both women out of the burning building even though they passed out from smoke inhalation during the fire.

That is bittersweet that they didn't survive. However, it's good their chief recognized their efforts and rewarded them.

I remember this story. Stanley is about 50 or so miles from us. Very sad for the family. Thankful for officer Curfman

The officer can look himself in the mirror and say to himself "I did my best." and carry on with his life.
