I Need to Take My Own Advice

I don't know whether everybody does this. When my daughter (25) got underwear for Christmas she asked me if they should be washed first. I told her yes. Clothes and bedding should be washed as you don't know what chemicals are in them. Just like you wash dishes before using them. So what did I go and do? I just had to wear my new sweatshirt yesterday. It fit exactly the way I like it and is so comfy. Well.... after I got out of the shower this morning I realized my skin had turned blue. I took a couple of old washcloths and used the vinegar and Blue Dawn combination to get it off (remember, I just had a shower with regular soap). My bra was blue and even my watch strap. I got most of it off the watch strap but not all. My Apple watch kept timing me out so I had to stop. So, a stupid example of "do as I say, not as I do". Do you wash new items before you use them? P.S. I immediately put the sweatshirt in the washing machine by itself today.

No. I don’t wash new clothing until I wear them but Ive never had dye to rub off on me. I do wash sheets and pillow cases before I put them on the bed and towels.

@RubyHawk Yes, something like that. Like I said, it could have been fake like a lot of things are on the internet but it's a good cautionary story.

@RubyHawk Chemicals to preserve the material... chemicals in the dye... chemicals in the packaging... who knows? But you really need to wash clothes and bedding before using. Don't you always wash new dishes before you use them? Better safe than sorry... and blue.

@patgalca That’s interesting. I can’t think of anything in new clothing that could cause disease. But who knows what chemical might be put in the cloth.

Mostly I do but not always. That was pretty unfortunate to have the dye come out on your skin.

Worse that it didn't come off in the shower. I had to use a vinegar/Blue Dawn combo, then get back in the shower. Still not sure I got it all off.

@patgalca It must be a pretty potent brew to dye your skin.

@JudyEv Well, if the tag tells me anything, it is totally blue now after washing. I think it was white beforehand.

Yes I do. Granted, some clothes I've put on prior to tossing them in the wash, but only for a couple seconds to a minute or so. Nothing long-term. Just enough try on the item and show my husband the fit (wal-mart closed dressing rooms) so... had to try stuff on when I got home. But I did a load of laundry like five minutes later.

I almost always wash bedding and clothes before using. More now than ever before. I don't know why I didn't think before wearing the comfy sweatshirt.

It is also a practice in the family to wash new clothes and the like before using them.

Sorry that happened! I definitely wash new sheets and pillow cases before using. One time I didn't and my nose ran all night!

You never know what chemicals are in the products, but also in the bags they are packaged in. You can get some bedding packaged in a shrink wrap type packaging which would make it worse.
