Changing my eBay Tactics

I sell on eBay and have done so for about 10 years. When my daughter was in college, I sold whatever I could just to earn money for her college tuition. Now I want to change my business model and have fewer items listed to sell, but items that are worth more profit. I have whittled down my listings from 450 last year to only about 125. But my biggest challenge has been to NOT buy items at thrift stores or garage sales that will bring in a $5 - $10 profit. I just don't have the room to store those items and I want to streamline what I sell so I can do more freelance writing. This past year I did better in terms of earning money. I paid $25 for a Lenox creche and sold it for $61. pair of shoes for $5.00 and sold them for $35. And I bought a new Carhartt sweatshirt for $15.00 and sold it for $65! That is more money for a lot less work. Do you sell on eBay or Poshmark, or Mercari?

My house is loaded with junk we've accumulated over the years. If I think about it, if I took the time, I might be sitting on a fortune. lol

@porwest Same here. George has a small plane collection and car collection. He had a frind make him a custom display case to display his planes. I just won't touch them, because they're important to him.

@kaylachan That is understandable. Junk or not, some things do have a personal value that does not have a price tag attached to them.

I have done it before, but not recently. What is a Lenox creche? Do you highlight your items on the site so people have an easier time finding them. What is your secret?

@Kouponkaren I know LEnox, I just didn't know what a creche was. Never heard the term.

Lenox is a brand of china that is rather expensive if you buy it at retail. A creche is a nativity scene. This was Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. No, I don't highlight my items because it costs extra money. As long as I keep listing new items on a regular basis, people seem to be able to find my items.

How smart! I don't think I have an eye for deals though.

@AmbiePam It has taken me years to learn what sells best on eBay, and I am still learning every day. And some things that I think will sell quickly don't sell at all, or take a long time.

I sold on Ebay for a while but postage is so complicated and so expensive now that I've stopped. You've made some good deals. I hope you make many more.

@Kouponkaren If someone the other side of Australia buys something, the postage is a lot dearer than if a local person buys it - and it varies according to weight and size. I'm sure you have to deal with similar but I find it frustrating.

@JudyEv As far as postage, I just add what I think the postage will be to the cost, or add it as a shipping charge and that works for me. After all of this time I am a pretty good judge at that. So basically all of my customers are paying for their own postage.

I am glad you have had a successful year selling on Ebay. I have never bought/sold on any of those sites.

@Dena91 I have found that on some things, like used books and clothing, it's hard to beat eBay prices.

wow, you have earned well there. I don't sell on these platforms but I am planning to sell on our local platforms.

@Janet357 WE have some stuff in our home that we no longer want that is bigger than what I can ship, so I will probably sell those things on our local platform in our community. On eBay I don't sell anything that is bigger than a breadbox, and the smaller the better. I don't like shipping things that are challenging to pack.

It has been a while since I used eBay. Still, if you can buy low and sell high then good oh!
