Okay, all you people asking where winter was, are you satisfied? Or, as that meme on Facebook says, “Hey, northerners, your weather is down here, drunk on my lawn. Come get it.” While you’re waiting for better weather here’s another song with “star” in the title, a request from @RasmaSandra . #9: Kansas City Star - Roger Miller The name of one of the newspapers in Kansas City at the time this song was written was the Kansas City Star. It doesn’t take much to inspire a good songwriter. Here Roger Miller, who had half a dozen Grammy awards (he’s pictured on the back of the album with them, and that was before he won everything for “King of the Road”!), takes that newspaper name and turns it into a tale of a man who is content in his job, being “a hero of the younger set” by hosting a local children’s show. We had those all over the place in the old days, and I kinda miss them. Our local one was called T-Bar-V Ranch, and one of the stars was the brother of actor/comedian Foster Brooks. But they live on in our memories, and in this Roger Miller tune. Kansas City Star Written by Roger Miller Recorded by Roger Miller From The 3rd Time Around, 1966 Stay tuned, we’re gonna have a Popeye cartoon in a minute:

I always think of King of the Road when I hear his name.

One of the most amazing things I’ve seen was on Roger Miller night in Chicago where EVERYONE in the bar sang “King of the Road.” You don’t expect people in Chicago, 55 years removed from a song, to know that. But they did.

Roger Miller was talented but like @CarolDM when I see or hear his name, King of The Road is what I think of first.

We had Cap'n Ernie's Cartoon Showboat. And the idiots who ran the station, WOC TV, the same bunch of intellectual giants who gave Ronnie Reagan (He was a fine actor and lousy politician and a so-so radio announcer) his first radio job, reused all the tapes and now you can find a five minute or so long segment on YouTube and that's all. Don't get me started on that.

They did that a lot with the early Johnny Carson shows and most of Hollywood Squares in the 60s. No telling what wonderful things were destroyed.

@FourWalls The good news is that there is a salt mine in Kansas where they stored a lot of Tonight Show recordings and I don't know if the complete collection is there but they have put a couple on YouTube from the 60's that we thought were lost forever. It will be nice if other shows are in that vault, too. I would love to see all the old Hollywood Squares.

I still do. Lots of great music came out of that man’s pen and guitar.
