My BMI Says I am Overweight

I found out about BMI (Body Mass Index) a few years ago and have been trying to get my BMI down to a healthier number. The range we are all supposed t be at is somewhere between 18.5 and 24.9. If you are under the score of 18, you are underweight and need to gain weight. If you are between 25 and 29.9 you are overweight, and if your score is 30 or more, you are supposedly obese. My best friend is in the obese range and has been there for years. She doesn't necessarily look "obese" but she is about 50 pounds overweight. It is not healthy for her and we have tried to lose weight together for years, slowly succeeding. She is still in the obese range though. I have always been in the overweight range and as of right now, I am at 26.4. I am so close to being in the healthy weight range and I am trying very hard to get there for health reasons. Do you know your BMI? If not, just Google BMI, and links will pop up with boxes for your height and weight and then you just click a button and it tells you your BMI.

I've never used BMI. Because I happen to be of moderate weight, neither fat nor thin. Good luck with your diet.

@sinari Well good for you. That must be a great feeling. I use it as a guideline of where my weight should be, and as a motivation to lose weight to be healthy.

@cherigucchi Good for you. I wish I could stay the same. Getting to my goal weight will make me healthier. That's my goal for 2022...getting to my healthy weight and then staying there.

I am also considered obese but I don't really care. I am at a comfortable weight and will be there for a long time to come. Good luck in your endeavor to lower your BMI. You don't have far to go to be in a healthy range.

@Kouponkaren ......I was reading where the experts say that occasional fasting and the Mediteranean diet are good choices for people.

@celticeagle Yes you are right but it's always the last pounds that are the hardest to take off. I am working on it though. And this time I am not giving up!

@celticeagle I am trying to follow a Mediterranean diet/vegetarian diet but haven't really been exercising since my bursitis flared up. I need to lose 10 more pounds and I am going to do it this year. For Sure. It's bad for my health not to. I am trying intermittent fasting too. It's all going okay. Not as hard as I though it would be.

Yes I don’t know what mine is and even thought I’m slightly over weight for me age and hight the doctor and I agree they it’s perfectly health for me that’s why it’s import to talk to your doctor about it and let them decided if it’s good or not for you because the BMI is based on an average and not on the individual person.

@ShyBear88 Yes, I know, and I have talked to my doctor about it. A few doctors and all have said that they would be very happy if I reached my goal weight, which is actually at the upper end of the bmi "healthy weight" spectrum.

@Kouponkaren that’s good! Mine and I agree my 130-135 is good for me. I’ve always been under weight so it’s weird to be slightly heavy.

@Kouponkaren I have been thin all my life, my husband is definitely under weight now, I cannot force him to eat.

@LadyDuck Well, it sounds like you 2 are in the same thin boat!

@LadyDuck In this day and age it is very seldom I meet someone who is that thin. Most of my friends are in the overweight to obese area. Either I need to get them motivated to lose weight for their health, or I need to add some thinner friends to the mix to keep me motivated not to overeat.

@kouponkaren my BMI says I am overweight - it’s a very rude, pass remarkative thing for it to say.

@xFiacre It is quite rude, especially for those people who fall in the "obese" range because if their score is 30-35 or so they don't really look obese to me. Be glad you aren't in that range or you would really feel insulted!

@Kouponkaren Lately, I am trying to trim down my food intake. I can blame the lockdown thing because not able to do my walking daily at that time.

@Shavkat I have been in your situation many times my friend. My husband sometimes refuses to get on the scale for weeks because he knows he is overweight after we come back from a trip, etc. He gives himself a few weeks to lose the weight before he will get back on the scale.

@jstory07 Good for you. I am not happy with mine, and my doctor encourages me to lose weight. Once I lose these last 12 (now 10) pounds I will be happy with that.

I do a check with the NHS online BMI calculater, just to check my maths. Not an expert, but I've read that BMI is a bit of a blunt instrument. When I last had a health check, there were quite a few extra questions to go into the mix!

@Kouponkaren Have to say I find that a lot of online sites have strange results!
• United States
6 Jan 22
@Tonrybs Yikes, by that site's calculations I am at 28.6 instead of 26.6 on the site I use. But then it told me to lose 8 pounds when the other chart says I have to lose 10. That's very strange.
