2022 Health Journey - Days 15 & 16

I previously shared about a good day (January 14th) where my blood sugars were in a good range during the 2nd half of the day. Now I am here to share about the past 2 days - since I promised that I would share about how my journey goes this year. Things may be changing some, but I can still share. So on Saturday (the 15th) I woke up with a fasting sugar of 93, which is really good. For breakfast I just had a Quest protein bar - I didn't check 2 hours after since I was shopping. However, I did check before my next meal and it was 125. For my 2nd meal of the day, we went to KFC and I got a mashed potato bowl with gravy and chicken. I wanted to enjoy something I really liked and I also wanted to see how I was affected with being on insulin for a few days. Yeah - it spiked up to 269! For dinner I just had a meat stick and some BBQ pork rinds, after that my number went down to 159. Move on to today - I woke up with my blood sugar at 133, not horrible considering the high yesterday and just 10 days ago I was in the 400s. For my first meal today I had a strawberry keto chow shake made with heavy cream. - Blood sugar after went up a bit to the 150's (I believe). The next meal I had today was tacos with low carb street taco shells (they were 0 net carbs). Following that I had a slimfast cup that was made to taste like a twix candy bar (and it actually does). My sugar after that was in the 160's so didn't really spike much. To finish out the day of eating I had a sandwich using some low carb bread, definitely not Keto though. I think these will not be on my diet, at least while only on the small dose of insulin....it shot my blood sugar up to 195. What I really need to do is make the egg white protein bread in the future. It could be the zero sugar sodas, but I was still drinking them when my blood sugars were under 100 the other day so I don't think it is that. What do you think? I don't plan to give up the sodas - but I do need to get back to drinking my water too.

I wasn't surprised to see KFC knocked it out of the ballpark. Otherwise, I think you did well.

I wanted a treat since my family was going there, so thought I would test the bowl and see how I responded blood sugar wise. I expected close to 200 at least, but not closer to 300. The bread that is supposed to be keto and diabetic friendly disappointed me too. But otherwise I have been low carb.

@just4him Well if I keep doing low carb I may just need the long acting insulin and not to stick myself with every meal. I still want to have some things I like occasionally but for the most part I am doing low carb

I should check my blood sugar when I am at my MILs tomorrow. She got diagnosed diabetic last year and has a ton of test kits.

That can be a good idea to check, even if you aren't diabetic. Doesn't usually hurt either

Bread is a big spiker. My hubby is bad about eating too much every day. He is finally going to see another doctor in Feb. His old dr. left the practice and he really didn't help him at all. The new doctor is one that I have seen before and she takes a lot of time with her patients. It will take you a bit of time to get it all figured out but you will. Start a food journal and record what you eat and your blood sugar readings morning and night. It will naturally go up right after a meal.

Yeah well this one is supposed to be "Keto" and good for diabetics. I have been diabetic for 12 years almost....I do know how this works, everyone will go up after a meal....just those like me wont' see it go down to normal in 2 hours. For me, I do if I eat super low carb. And hope the new doctor works out for him

It will take some experimentation to figure out what you can and cannot eat. Good job!

I would say that it's a good progress there. Good that you are keeping a record and constantly monitoring it. That would help you understand the body and the food that suits you. My BSL spiked a bit on 14th and 15th and it went up to 224. I had a few sweets as it was festival here. I am glad that today fasting was back to 103 and now after breakfast it is 128. . I have to be disciplined with my diet till the next festival

do you take the insulin at night or throughout the day?

I take one shot in the middle of the day, they said to do it at the same time and so I am just taking it when they first gave it to me (around 2 PM). Still waiting to see the specialist to see if I need it throughout the day.

Drink lots of water and if it is not the soda than you can drink them to.

I am not giving them up, I have to give enough up and I have drank the zero sugar sodas for years with no problems.

Yes, I know regular bread is bad. This was supposed to be Keto/Diabetic friendly. I tried it again today to see and it still spiked me. And I can't not eat potatoes for the rest of my life. I still am going to allow a little occasionally.

Zero sugar soda didn't make your sugar level go up. Your carbs were up a tiny bit, but you're doing so much better! Good job:) KFC mash potato bowl, that's what caused the major rise, of course.

@MommyOfEli2013 But the beautiful part about it, you enjoyed a delicious dinner and will never experience the 400s ever again!
