I Thought Technology Made Things FASTER…..

It boggles my mind. When I was a kid my parents would get a new car, get a temporary tag, and get their new plates about a week later. Now we have technology that’s supposed to make things faster, and what happens? It takes ninety days to get a new tag for the car?!?! That was brought home today. When I went to get my driver’s license renewed the last time, I walked in, waited in line about 10 minutes, paid my money, and got my license right then and there. Today? I had to make an appointment, then I still had to wait. Oh, and they’re mailing me my new driver’s license. I didn’t walk out of the building with it. Instead, I got a temporary paper driver’s license. Say what? Some of that could be associated with the “real ID.” I opted not to go that route, because I already have two forms of ID that qualify as a “real ID” (my military ID and my VA card). And, as I told my brother, why give Kentucky an extra five bucks? But seriously, folks??? With all this technology that’s supposed to make things FASTER I have to wait ten days (ten business days at that) to get my driver’s license? Maybe technology only makes things faster for the private sector. It just slows the government down even more. A little computerized song from Warren Zevon:

as someone that builds systems like that I would defend them but instead will say we sometimes pick one or two people to suffer.

This happens all the time with online banking too. Or trying to pay sometime. I waste so much time sometimes, I find myself wishing I could write them a letter! At least you know it will get there eventually - well, usually.

"Real ID?" What's the difference between that and what you'll eventually be getting?

They verify it with a birth certificate, social security card, and proof of residence. Since the guv’ment already did that work with my military experience I don’t need to get it done again.

@FourWalls But does it look any different? And I'm assuming you had to present your current driver's license to renew, and that isn't good enough?

@BarBaraPrz — when you get a real ID you also have to bring your birth certificate, social security card, and two forms of proof of address. Apparently the only difference is there’s a star on the “real ID” drivers license. As I said, my military ID qualifies (and I don’t fly, so I don’t need it for that), so no reason to get one.

Yeah, I don't get the mailing thing. There must be a good reason for it though.

Some things just make no sense whatsoever.

I can understand how you might feel about that. I think I would, too. Technology, does make things faster, when it wants to be, but now a days, people don't want to deal with each other so of course they would like to be as hands off as possible.

They force us to go through a similar process here, too. Apparently the reason for it is to increase security and cut down on... erm... falsified documents. Leave it to a few people to ruin it for everybody else.

Things have certainly slowed down, When I was driving in the mid-80s that was what I remember they took my photo put it all in a machine and out came my license ready to use no problems at all I hope you get yours soon,

Last time I tried to get a so-called real ID, I got so aggravated, I just got another regular one. Technology is not always progress.
