How to spot genuine organic eggs?

Last week, I bought a tray of organic eggs here. They were relatively small. But what surprised me was their yolks, very pale. I always thought that brown/organic eggs had dark orange color but this one had paler yolks than the commercial one's. Have you encountered this?

There are several different questions here. You mention brown eggs - do you mean the egg shells are brown? The colour of the shells has absolutely no relation to the colour of the contents or to whether the eggs are organic or not and the egg inside is exactly the same as the inside of a white egg or a blue egg! Hens tend to produce richer coloured yolks when they have access to plenty of fresh food as @JudyEv says. But organic is not necessarily the same thing. Commercial laying hens can be kept indoors, in individual cages ('Batteries', which are being phased out here) or in barns. Or they can be kept outdoors with space to forage on grass and scratch around for themselves ('free range'). In either system they will be given commercial pelleted food which is either 'organic' or not. 'Organic' means it has been produced without using any artificial pesticides or fertilizers. So the organic eggs could still have been produced by chickens kept indoors in batteries with no fresh food.

@JudyEv oh thanks. It is a bit of a minefield with so many options, and not easy to know if you are doing the 'right' thing!

@Fleura One of our big poultry farms here is free-range but they have old caravans and buses all over the paddocks. I guess these are for the chooks to roost in at night but they must be decked out with nests as well. I should really call in and ask one day.

Being able to eat grass and green feed is what gives nice yellow yolks. If the yolks are overly bright, then they are being fed some additive. Pale yolks means they're not being fed properly.

I haven't bought any organic eggs so I don't know much about what the color of their yolks is supposed to be. Do they taste different from regular eggs?

The yolk color is related to the hen's diet. Eggs that come from hens that eat mainly wheat, or bread have a pale yolk. Hens fed with corn and soy have a more orange yolk.

@Janet357 Usually it is because they are fed with better food.

I had never bought organic eggs but i am working in a warehse. Do take note that all fresh eggs that supermarket received will be put into the baack store without air ventilation for a week before display on the shelf.
