Ok. It's sweet & like soft licorice, so it's an acquired taste. Maybe the ethnic section of supermarket. It's a Chinese New Year, rice cake.
Ingredients:
6 ti leaves
1 pound brown brick sugar
1/2 cup raw sugar
2 1/2 cups hot water
1 pound mochiko (glutinous rice flour), sifted
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 dried red date
2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds

I did mini research, you're right. Gao in Philippines is called tikoy.

Ingredients:
Non-stick cooking spray
1 ¼ cup water
1 (16-ounce) package won tong (Chinese brown sugar, available in Chinatown) or 1 (16-ounce) box dark brown sugar
1 (13.5-ounce) can coconut milk
¼ cup canola oil
1 (16-ounce) box mochiko (mochi flour)
1 ½ tablespoons sesame seeds toasted
8 red dates
