How Much Is Gasoline In Your Area?

I ran to town this morning to put a bill in the out-going mail at the post office and also went to the co-op to get a sack of poultry layer pellets for the chickens. I was surprised to see that the gasoline had taken a big jump here. Two days ago it was $2.89 a gallon. Today it was $3.07 at the gas station we usually gas up at. The Shell station down the road was $3.09 a gallon. I sure hope this rise hits the ceiling soon and starts dropping but it doesn't seem like that is going to happen. It is a shame since we have plenty of gasoline on reserve, yet we are still bringing it in from foreign countries. This is just stupid. It is getting to where people can't afford to put gasoline in their vehicles to go to work. I am thankful that we are both retired now and do not have to go to a lot of places. We have been doubling up on some of my trips to work at the boutique. My husband will drop me off and go work on our house in Louisiana. I think he has decided that we will fix it up and rent it or put it on the market and be done with it. How much is gasoline in your area? And just over a year ago, the US was energy independent. I live in a state with one of the highest taxes on fuel. I got gas last week and the lowest grade, 87 octane, was 4.39 a gallon. I had to get a gallon of the highest grade, 92 octane, at 4.79 a gallon. It was at a low of 3.09 and 3.49 respectively, for a gallon a little over a year ago. I drive very little but for those that have to, it's a serious issue. I fear that the low fuel costs over the past four years are gone for good. Just part of the new normal.

I hope it is not the new normal but very well may be. It's sad. Our economy is on the downfall very badly.

@kareng I live in an out of the way place and last time out shopping, the store shelves were as empty as they were at the height of lockdowns. My 6 dollar block of cheese is now 8 dollars. Ground beef is over 5 dollars a pound here. I honestly don't know how people can afford to raise a family through all this.

@Vikingswest1 I agree. I feel for my oldest daughter with 3 boys and 1 girl. Two of the boys are step kids but they are there half the time so her grocery bill is crazy.

@kareng I have an app I use that gives me rebates on each gallon of gas I purchase. It’s usually between 15-22 cents per gallon depending on the day of the week, so my gas often ends up being about $3.10-3.20 per gallon.

@kareng I use Checkout51 which is a grocery app, but also gives rebates for gas. It will show you on a map which stations you can get rebates at. Thankfully, the gas station next to my house is one of them. By the way, when I left for my backpacking trip a week ago, gas was at $3.35/gallon here. I just filled up again yesterday and it is now up to $3.55/gallon. WTF??? What did I miss while I was gone? Lol

$2.98 a gallon for Regular. Since I semi-retired last January, we use about a tank of gas in a month, if that much. *shrug* We literally only leave the house to buy groceries or to go to a doctor's appointment.

@kareng I couldn't remember what I paid last time since that was two weeks ago. I asked Gas Buddy for the price at the store we use.

That's a really cool photo. I haven't been out in a while; so I don't know what gas is. The last time I was out, it was over $3. We got rid of our rental, finally, and were SO GLAD that we did.

I was looking for one with a shot of the whole gas station with dad and my uncle standing in front of but I did not find that one. Yes, I'm not too thrilled about that option. I used to be for it and he was against it. I am just tired of all the battles.

@LindaOHio We are constantly getting phone calls and text messages asking if we want to sell the house. My hubby finally talked to one and just as we expected they want you to give them your house. This one offered just a little more than the lot was worth. That isn't going to happen.

@kareng The house ended up having to have more work done to it than was worth it.

You are so right about gasoline prices. I don't think the price will stop increasing. Bidens policy of eliminating gasoline in favor of electric vehicles (which the majority of people cannot afford), will make us further dependent on foreign oil. As you say, pretty stupid making our own gas supply scarce. If you have high demand for it, but not enough supply, of course prices will rise. I'm old enough to remember working at my father's service station when prices were around 32 cents a gallon

I can remember the gas wars in the 60's and early 70's where gas was as low as $.15 a gallon. You are right on the electric vehicles. Are we all supposed to put in charging stations at our home? I don't see how that plan will work at all. We had several parking places on campus at LSU before I retired in 2017 and they were rarely used.

@kareng Exactly! The only way the majority of Americans can afford to drive an electric vehicle is if the government is buying them for us.

The prices now are really skyroketting. This does not help especially that the pandemic is nor yet over.

Hi. Gas around here topped $3 a gallon this week There are lots of reasons for it. The cold weather pulling oil from gas refining for home heating is a big one. The other is more people going back to work and traveling. I'm lucky that I have a short commute. My missus has a 70-mile round trip every day. Needless to say, she drives the more fuel-efficient of our two vehicles.

Actually, there are not many people traveling, and most people are working from home now. I don't see any logic in your reasoning.

@DWDavis But the people are not going back to work, they make more money sitting at home on their bums. And I don't believe there are that many people traveling because the streets are empty even at peak hours in the capital city of Baton Rouge, LA. I know when we went to Florida earlier this year the beach was empty even on the weekend.

@kareng Around here, there are a lot more people traveling. You have to book a campsite at an RV park months ahead these days. And every manufacturer around the state is hiring. These are the kinds of jobs people cannot do from home.

We will need to fill up or just put enough to get us there and fill up there when we go to Louisiana Monday. Gas has been cheaper in Denham Springs where the boutique is located lately.
