Where Do They Go ?

I am reading about the blizzard in the East Coast of the U.S. --10 States affected with high winds, lots of snow and freezing cold. Now- I am wondering about the homeless. Where do they go in winter? Are there enough shelters to accommodate them? Do you see many homeless in your area? Would you give shelter to a homeless person? Image by pixabay

Honestly, I'm not positive... I know some cities have homeless shelters. I seriously doubt there are enough beds for all of them. Some churches open their doors during freezing weather to help shelter those in need. I know the closest large cities to where I live have homeless shelters. Pretty and I donate money to them when we can. (We've taken in friends when they didn't have any place to go. One friend lived with us for over a year before he got back on his feet and moved out.) Would I take in a homeless person I didn't know? Probably not. I'm nice, but not willing to take chances like that.

@Kandae11 Our friend started getting divorced and then lost his job. He showed up, asking what I'd cooked for dinner. When we found out he didn't have a place to go we insisted he stay with us. *shrug* We didn't ask how long he thought he'd be here.

I once took in a friend for three months - she had said 1 month - Anyway l couldn't turn her away when she showed up with a suitcase at my door also bruises and a black eye. I am not sure l would take the risk with a stranger in these times.

@DaddyEvil Ha , it won't be nice to ask. I was so concerned that my friend was living with an abuser - l didn't ask her how long - she told me a month.

I don't know where they go in the states, but we get snow storms here and have homeless people, they have shelters and warming stations. For 6 months of the year they set up these trailers for them to live in to keep them out of the cold.

@Kandae11 Its just a community center with tables that people can sit at and get a bowl of soup and hot coffee/tea and stay there to warm up for a while.

Probably shelters, most of them, the rest just go to die if we being honest. I nearly hit a homeless man one time just walked out in front of me. It was not a case of I was not paying attention. I usually pay very close attention to when I drive. This fool looked like he wanted to die so stepped out in front of my car. I feel bad for you sir but that is about the crappiest thing you could do to someone. Besides I am not the one that made laws to allow you to be homeless and wanting to die. Why would you do that to someone?

Thankfully you didn't hit him, but you are thinking if you did , how terrible it would make you feel. Do you really think he walked out in front of your car? Maybe he wasn't seeing well.

@Kandae11 I know he did because when in front of my car he did not even try to move, I was lucky just got my brakes done. Car stopped pretty much on a dime minus 10 or 20 feet.

When we were homeless and it was so cold, we went to the shelter. It was a disgusting place full of addicts and criminals. To say the least..better off outdoors if weather permitted.

@Kandae11 For many years off and on Kandase..we are what you call the chronically homeless due to poverty and a myriad of other factors. So years long of being homeless. Myself and my son. That is why when we do get a place, no matter how bad it is, we try to stay off the streets here. I have experienced atrocities to my person on the streets. Not a place one wants to be, and I am not getting any younger to be able to fend them off.

There are homeless shelters here that take the homeless in over night. They even feed them a snack and breakfast in the morning.

In tropical countries we don't have blizzards or winter but we have strong typhoons from time to time. This is really heartbreaking when people don't have secures place to go and something to eat.

I suppose many are conditioned for this kind of weather or else find places that provide shelter against the elements. Many of the homeless may be good people but there is always that one that could pose a danger to me so no I would not offer shelter in my home but if I had the money to spare I would help them find a place to rent for the night.

I also would prefer to help them find a place. I remember the report about a woman taking in a couple (male and female) for the night. She gave them dinner and went to bed. They got into her room and killed her in the night. Happened about ten years ago.

Fortunately here we do not get such extremes of weather not since l was a child. Our winters are fairly mild. I sat out in the garden with a cup of coffee today! Crazy its January! Nice to see a familiar face.

We had quite a few blizzards here this winter. There are shelters for the homeless. I wouldn't take a strange in but will direct them or help them get to a shelter.

Our conditions don't get as severe as yours do but I'm sure some homeless still get very cold in our winters. I guess they sleep in doorways or under bridges if they can't find other shelter.

Coincidentally, my place is in the tropics. So no snow. For the homeless in my country, they are taken care of by the government, by providing a foundation to accommodate them.

In Washington, DC they are required to give everyone shelter in the winter when temperatures fall below 38 degrees or less. They open shelters to accommodate people who are homeless.

Sorry to hear. Hope you are staying safe. Yes it's a problem for homeless people. We can't imagine in what condition they would be staying out. Here there are some homeless people too. It's sad
