When a Former Student Recognizes You, Mask and All

The missus and I were shopping at PetSmart with the dogs today and as I walked down one of the rows a young man in the store uniform stopped me and asked if I was Mr. Davis. I confessed that I was. His eyes lit up - he was masked as was I - and he said, "You were my seventh-grade math teacher." Then he told me his name. I remembered him immediately, though, I would not have recognized him mask or no. I knew him as a 12 yo boy. He'd grown into a strapping young man. We exchanged pleasantries and he went back to work. It's always a special moment being recognized by a former student.

Sometimes the students don't realize that while I may not have changed since they were in my class, they have changed a lot and need to tell me who they are. I remember who they were when they say their names.

The thing is that students will inevitably change but their teachers won't - well not so much anyway.

My appearance hasn't changed much, and I have a very distinct voice. It may be my voice that first prods their memory.

That is indeed a good compliment to a teacher.

That's wonderful. They say things go in threes so you'll probably have 2 more occurrences like this

How nice that would have been. You're right - adults don't change so much but young people change a lot over the teen years.

It is always nice to be remembered by a former student many years after you had the pleasure to teach them in school.
