You are asking me this? Why?
Yesterday morning I got a text from my daughter’s best friend (who is counted as one of my bonus children). An exact quote “So I need better methods for organizing craft materials. Have you any sage advice?” This young woman has been in my house regularly over the years. As one of my bonus children, I don’t feel obligated to speed clean before she visits (I never really thought of that before–my bonus children are the friends who were, and are, welcome to drop in unannounced). She has seen my workspace, she has witnessed the tendency of my projects to creep outside of the space where they belong.
My phone pinged at a particularly inconvenient time, so it was a few hours before I responded. My response was the photo above. I am not particularly organized. Most of the tools that I use with regularity don’t ever get put away and there is usually detritus from multiple projects spread around my sewing area.
Looking at the picture I can only laugh at myself (and wonder why there is a hanky draped over the cord to my iron).
Have you ever been asked for advice when it should have been abundantly clear that you were not in any way qualified to advise on that topic?

I used to upset Pretty when she was younger. I have a place each thing in my house belongs. If it gets moved, for whatever reason, I want it put back in it's place when someone is done with it. I want to be able to find things when I need them. (If you looked at her bedroom, you'd understand my frustration.
But I also don't go into my daughter's bedroom, if I can help it, too.
)
People surprise me all the time with the things they want advice on. *shrug* I think it's more they want a different set of eyes looking at what they're trying ot do than anything else.

I have two daughters. One is super organized and disciplined, the other is an artist (need I say more?). They shared a room for 17 years and they both survived. I'm not as disorganized as the artist, but certain parts of my life would probably run much smoother if I had some of my younger daughter's organizational abilities.

@SophiaMorros I totally understand.
When Pretty was younger but old enough to leave home alone, we had one of her friends that lived with us. I have a kind of odd "talent", I guess a person could call it. I glance around a room and come back later and can tell each object that's been moved there. They weren't supposed to go into my bedroom unless I invited them in. When I'd get home from work, I'd ask why this object was moved or why someone bothered something in my dresser drawers.
They did, eventually, learn to leave things in my bedroom alone.

I probably have been, yes. You do have a nice, spacious area to do your projects.

@celticeagle It makes a big difference when people move out! I'm spilling into space vacated by my children.

I've taken over about a third of our basement family room. When our children moved out I called dibs on their desks.

I wish I had a space that could be designated to my crafts because no matter what I'm working on it just seems to overflow into other areas.
Knowing you I can't picture your sewing machine ever put away since you're always working on some sewing project.
I love the picture of your workspace and it just shows that you are a busy bee.

@SophiaMorros I remember you doing all that work for the theatre costumes and how involved you were. I always wished I had that much sewing talent

I was helping out with a theatre production late last year and the costumer for that show needed something sewn and asked if my sewing machine was set up. I laughed and told her that my sewing machine has not been put away in at least 2 years. If I have to take it out and put it away it would not get used nearly as much.

That looks a great sewing room but I'm sure you need it with all the work you do in that area. Possibly the bonus child sees you as highly productive and that prompted her to ask for advice. I wonder wthat she thought of the photo.

@SophiaMorros When Vin left work, they were taking bets on the colour of his desk as no-one had seen it for years and years. But he could put his hand on whatever he wanted so it worked for him. lol Everybody has a different method of working, don't they?

She thought it was funny. She had been asking me if getting an old wardrobe or armoire and putting shelves in it would be a good solution for organizing craft supplies. It wouldn't work for me, and there are certain things that only get used regularly if they are out and accessible.

I would not call it good, but it works reasonably well for me.

That looks like a simply wonderful room to create in. I wish I had that kind of space!
And yes, sometimes if we haven't actually been in a situation or relationship, we don't feel qualified to give advice. As I get older, I find often others do ask older people like myself about things, if I am not feeling I know much about what they are asking, I just say so. Sometimes, I think people just want reassurance that they are doing the right thing.

For many years my sewing space was a tiny corner in the master bedroom. My children have moved out. The basement family room that I occupy a portion of was once the space my teenage sons shared.

@MarieCoyle I have a feeling that my projects would expand to fill however much space happened to be available.

Yes, we do have more room when they leave home. That is a nice big room for lots of projects.

Right now it is significantly messier than it was when I took that photo a few days ago. It's time to tidy up a little. If it gets too messy I can no longer function.

It looks fine to me.
I guess one way to think about it is, you are qualified if you are more organized than them.
I would get that all the time, and I would quote Jeff Dunham's Walter puppet: "do I LOOK like the keeper of that knowledge?"
I'm sure we all have something to contribute to someone who may be having more troubles than us on a particular subject.

It looks more organized than most but looks like it is used so that is a good thing.
