Did you say back verandah or jacaranda?

Tomorrow we have to be at Vince’s brother’s place at 8.00am. We are helping take down the last of his old patio. The beams on this section are quite heavy but he has his two grandsons coming to help. Vince is 74 and his brother is two and a half years younger. We have always helped each other with tasks that needed an extra pair of hands. In fact, all the siblings have helped with various projects over the years. Now we’re getting older, things sometimes become a bit more complicated. Since having to wear masks so often, Vince has lost one hearing aid when it flipped off with his mask but today it was his brother who had trouble hearing. He was told that the spade was ‘behind the jacaranda’ but he heard ‘It’s behind the back verandah’. I can see lots of fun and confusion for us all in the future. The photo is of a lovely hibiscus at our niece’s house.

It happens that my husband looks at me puzzled when he does not understand what I said. There are hilarious moments.

@JudyEv - Sometimes he hears the most funny words that I never said.

@LadyDuck I can believe it. I try to write down the funniest but sometimes I forget.

It's very funny sometimes what we think we hear.

Is the jacaranda anywhere near the back verandah? No one calls it a verandah around here, it is referred to as a porch. Verandah is the term I grew up with.

I think 'verandah' is so much grander and gentile than a mere porch.

The jacaranda and verandah are at opposite ends f the house. Many Aussie homes used to have verandahs on at least several sides of the house to try to keep the interior cool. That doesn't happen so much nowadays. @Sophiaorros @BarBaraPrz A porch here would be much smaller. On our farm in the summers, we'd move our beds out on the verandahs to escape the heat.

Does he even have a jacaranda in his yard?

Oh, wow! I hope nobody gets hurt, but yes, it does seem like there might be some misunderstandings today.

That reminds me of the days when I would visit my grandparents and both had hearing problems.

Masks make you mutter. I am so sorry about Vince's hearing aid because a good one is priceless when it comes to communication. I am glad you have family that can help out.

Those who depend on lip-reading must find it very, very difficult when people are masked.

Beautiful photo of the hibiscus. Hearing loss can cause a lot of giggles for others but a lot of confusion for the one who can't hear as well.

I can understand how confusing that can be. I wear them too, though not usually at home when there's nothing to hear except the clack of the keyboard.

@JudyEv Yes, they are. I've had to ask my son what he said a couple of times to make sure I heard right.

Some of the mistakes are hilarious. I have one hearing aid but I'm afraid I don't wear it very often.

A terrace to us probably wouldn't have a roof and wouldn't be attached to a house.

I think that must be another term with different meanings - here a patio is just a paved area outdoors for sitting.

The comment about the verandah was one day but work on the patio was the next day. His patio is as you've described it.
