Nessie, our almost-five-year-old mostly-golden retriever is spoiled rotten. Dad throws the frisbee for her nearly every afternoon and frequently takes her to romp in the dog-park. She is fed premium dog-food and receives lots of treats for responding correctly to various commands.
Dad is her favourite person. The rest of us are more-or-less tolerated.
Despite having a very cushy life, and having her whims catered to, she is very, VERY good at looking downright depressed.
I sent this photo to my husband while he was at work, and he wanted to know what we did to make her so sad.
I told him it was his fault for being at work.

Unless she is the center of attention she puts on the sad face.

She's deeply bonded to him. That's why. You said it yourself, she reacts differently when around you, or alone with you, then your husband.

Oh, I know exactly why she does it. She is spoiled rotten, but cute enough that she gets away with it.

Dogs so fickle and love it how they are. They are like I found heroin in human form and and if they cannot get that high they do that. Where I found true alphas are the best for whole family. Tristan, was neat, how he hated every dog, but every human if they passed his measure test never depressed as long as someone from family is around. My job to look after you and brings great pleasure because you part of the crew.

Nessie does it when Dad is home, too! She likes to act like she is ignored and neglected.

She still gets up to all the same tricks.

Her coat is so shiny and she blends with the floor. Does she know what time he comes home and waits for him?

She does. And when she sees him pull in the driveway she runs into my office, circles around behind me and then goes to sit at the door until he comes in.
