40 Days Going to Heaven

It is my mom's 40 days today. According to our belief, it is the day that she will be going to heaven after roaming around here on Earth. Some people will come and offer prayers for her. My day will be busy as well as the other family members. Time ticks so fast since my mom's death. I miss her and my dad. Do you have the same practice and belief? The photo is mine.

I was a Catholic and somehow agreed to this belief before. When I came to know Jesus and accepted Him as my personal Lord and Savior, I have learned many things - the truth. If people are truly saved, after they die, they are already granted that eternity. Spirits don't wander on earth..

I respect your opinion about it. I had tried to join some other religions but not of them answered my questions. Regardless, I still remain to be a Roman Catholic. I am not that religious but believe that there is God.

@Shavkat It is not about religion , it is the relationship with God.

@jobelbojel Indeed. Some of the religious people are false prophets of God.

I was raised that it goes immediately there.

I also think that way during my childhood years. The word doctrine comes along while I am growing older and this is what they taught of me.

I think the elders believe here and keep passing on to the next younger generation like us.

@LadyDuck Uhm, I am not sure. I guess they got the practice from Spanish priests before.

@Shavkat I suppose it is a local tradition, it's not coming from the Catholic religion.

No we don’t, not that I know about. People practice many different religions. I believe we all go to a beautiful place of love and joy.

Buddhist believe, 49 days the departed, on Earth with prayers every 7th day then, departed goes to heaven. My parents are gone too. Now, I'm an orphan, like you. It is sad, but, I look at our family album & remember our time together. It's saddest during their birthday, holidays, too. First 3-4 years are the hardest. Until your heart realizes, they're at heaven and won't come home. I feel, in all honesty, I'll not get over it. At my age, many have passed and left for heaven. It's sad.

I can feel you. I sometimes still talk to my mom and dad. especially before sleeping at night. I felt bad because they are the ones whom I always talk to.

@Shavkat Understood. I've my Mom's picture facing the tv. My guests never make fun of it. Everyday I wave to the sky in secret, at them, to let them know they mattered, they're missed & remembered. Little things to keep them remembered, we do.

Yes, it means that you and I are now both orphans. No more father and mother. Life in this world is only temporary. Everyone is just waiting for their time. May your mother rest in peace there.

Not quite. It varies here in the U.S. on the person, because we're culturally diverse. Me, Personally, I believe the soul assends as soon as it leaves the body. No waiting. In some cases, depending on the circumstances, I believe some souls will linger and watch over loved ones, or pay them one final visit to say good-bye (such was the case with my mother-in-law).

I sometimes feel confused with so many beliefs. This is also the word 'purgatory,' wherein the soul is in between heaven and hell. He or she is waiting for the final verdict. In fact, I had so many questions about my religion's doctrines in high school until now.

Not all Filipinos do this practice. For the reason that we are not having the same religion (Roman Catholic).

It's fine that you believe this but really, in my opinion, it's come down from humans rather than from God. Some believe one thing and some another but that's all fine.

We have a social custom of 40 days but our catechism doesn't teach that souls roam around for forty days before they are allowed into heaven.

It is a nice thing to say. I sometimes felt being abandoned in a good way. Some relatives cannot dig the thought of it though.
