Rude 101: Bye Bye and Play Dead

One of my boy students online did something inappropriate prior to his lesson. He said, 'Teacher, bye bye bye.' Then, he used his toy gun, pointed to his mouth, and clicked the trigger. You know what will be next, right? He played dead and did not say anything for a long time. For the whole class session, he randomly kills himself when being asked questions. Then, the rudeness comes out naturally when he pointed the toy gun at me (see the photo). Sorry, I am not going to play dead (chuckles). The course of action is to ignore it. I don't like to be stressed out and entertain him, too. How are you going to handle this rude student?

Same as @DaddyEvil I would tell his parents to find a different tutor. I would not want to have him again in my online class.

It seems that you and @DaddyEvil can read my mind. I did tell him to find another teacher.

@LadyDuck That is what I also think. This is how his parents raised him.

@Shavkat I do not like to deal with rude kids, this one does not seem to have good parents.

How old is your student? I guess that is the problem when the students become familiar with the teacher online and respect is not observed anymore in an online setting. Is there a way you can report that to anyone so they can somehow discipline and teach him some manners when doing online classes?

@Shavkat At least there is a way to report their bad behavior. My wife is a teacher too and she is teaching online because of the pandemic. But I think by next year they are expected to return to school and do face to face teaching again if things go well with the pandemic going away.

He is a spoiled brat 12 years old. I am glad that he is not my regular student. If it is, then the more he will not respect me during the classes online. I always set boundaries when teaching students online. We can only take snapshots to prove that he is a rude one. Then, we can give some bad or good feedbacks to them.

@rsa101 I think they will be going to teach physically soon. For the reason that children aged 5 to 11 started to have their vaccines and the same thing for the teens. In my city, medical students started to have classes face-to-face.

Is he the only student in the class or are there more you can devote your time to and ignore this kid who doesn’t want to learn and behave?

Unfortunately, the class is designed 1:1. So I cannot divert myself to others since it is not a group class.

That child was quite rude .You need to have a little counselling session with him. Are you able to converse with the parents of your students. This child need to be reprimanded by his parents so he doesnot repeat it.What is your escalation process like in this line of work.

That's the problem in teaching online. Most virtual teachers cannot talk to their parents. They are still at work or having over time because they can attend with their children at home. Or, that is how he was being raised by them.

@askme123 I hope I could do that instantly, but it is not allowed in my company. However, I can give some feedback with notes right after the lesson.

@Shavkat Well ,because you need the money if you speak to him about it and he persists with his bad behavior just leave him.The grades will show how much he was paying attention in class.

I'd be telling his parents to find him a different tutor or take his toys away from him before class.

So sorry to hear. You are getting worst students dear. This isn't the way to behave. You are a very patient and practical person. It must be so hard to ignore such things. Keep it up. Take care

Being in this industry, I learned the virtue of patience. If not, it will be hell dealing with this kind of student daily.

If the parents are around, I would tell them about this concern. I even asked where are they to him and he insisted that they are at work.

His parents need to pull him into line. I'd be refusing to teach him.

If there are some bad signs, we can stop the class. But then, it will be troublesome because we need to keep on explaining to the company. The best course of action is to file an appeal if they complained against us.
