A blast from the past - Mohee and Sioux

One of the comments on my last discussion mentioned the Ute was the name of a Native American tribe. When I was small, my father bred horses and mostly paint/pinto/skewbald/coloured horses. Cowboy and Indian films were very popular at the time and the Indians mostly seemed to have coloured ponies. Quite a few of our coloured horses were given names of Indian tribes. Some that I can remember were Apache, Cheyenne, Mohee, Sioux - but we didn't have a Ute. Photo shows Sioux and Mohee at an agricultural show (similar to a State Fair, I guess). I am riding Sioux and I was eight years old. I’m sorry about the quality of the photo. After this, the two ponies had to be turned out (let loose in the paddock) for twelve months as shortly before, they’d been stolen by two aboriginal boys, ridden some distance then turned loose. They’d eaten from some poison plants, which I’ve also written about previously. We didn’t realise they’d done this till they both got sick after the show.

@JudyEv I hope to catch up soon with all you and others have written. I'm just now able to get on again and so sleepy. I hope you had a good day.

I haven't written about the ponies before, just the fact that some of the native bushes are poisonous and these have to be cleared away before you can put stock on the land.

I do remember the name Ute as the nickname of the University of Utah sports teams until they changed their nickname to Red Rocks due to the color of their sports uniforms.

Names often get shortened, don't they?

I never heard of a Native American Tribe called Mohee, I know Moki, Mohican and Mojave. I have to search. I searched no tribes called Mohee.

@JudyEv It is possible that it was a nickname for another native American tribe. I remember that we called the original inhabitants of the north America "red skins", later we switched to Native Americans.

@JudyEv I had a look at the book I bought where all the Native American original tribes are listed, Mohee does not exist.

You're right. Maybe it was short for Mohican. I always thought it was an Indian tribe and didn't think to check.

You were riding Sioux and wearing a riding helmet but not jodhpurs?

I can't really tell if I'm wearing jodhpurs. I feel sure I would have been as I had jodhpurs which I only wore to shows. They used to rub my legs something awful.

Neat they had Indian names. My Uncle used to have a horse named Tonka which I think is an Indian name, but not a tribe name.

Tonka is a good name for a horse. Reminds of the kid's 'tough toys' - Tonka trucks, etc.

Yes, they did. With no stress from being ridden, they eventually recovered fully.

@JudyEv I do. I like horses in general. They are a beautiful animal. I'm going to try and learn how to draw them.
