Holden prototype sold at auction

Rebelann1949 (@rebelann) commented on my post about utes (utility vehicles) that she wished she had a 2014 Holden Commodore (VF). I wonder, Rebelann, if you’d like to pay $108,000 on the prototype of a 1979 Holden VH SL/E which sold on Saturday. It is the only one surviving of three prototypes. The model was released in 1981 and production on the model ceased in 1984. The car was discovered under a tarpaulin in the Wimmera region of Victoria. The car has never been started, let alone driven and still had putty in the boot from where the shaping was hand-crafted. It seems it went to a South Australian TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and ended up with one of the teachers there. At the same auction, a 1968 Holden HK Monaro fetched $330,000. Holden ceased production in 2017. Photo of a Holden. Holdens are/were used Australian police.

It's amazing how much people will pay for something that takes their fancy.

Why did they stop producing that model?

I'm not sure why. They stopped all production in 2020 and I think that is the reason.

@JudyEv That’s still an awful amount to pay for a vehicle.

Really?? Maybe an uncle of mine is responsible for all the confectionery around the place. My maiden name is Candy.

@kareng In my mother's time, nearly everyone was called by their surname - Mrs this, Mrs that - but lots simply called my Mum 'Candy'. She liked it really.

They stopped producing all cars in 2020 so this was one of the them.

If I had that kind of money to throw around I might, it's a classic for sure.

Yes they do. Carols hubby has to have a classic car to work on then he sells it and buys another one.

They are uniquely Australian and aren't made any more. So collectors (in Australia) like to snap up any that come along.

The only Holden I ever knew anything about was William, the actor. That’s amazing that someone would get a car, cover it up, and never use it. My dealership mechanic is shocked when he sees my odometer (right now I’m over 42,000 miles and the car won’t be two years old until May), and I tell him, “Hey, Jay Leno can buy cars and park ‘em in a garage. I can’t.”

Well, I guess some spend incredible fortunes on paintings then leave them in a warehouse. Who knows what their thinking is.

@JudyEv I let my husband buy a new car one year ago. Everything is close here, but I like to load the grocery inside the car instead than bringing home the bags walking.

@LadyDuck We bought a new one when we moved. It will be the last one we buy but it's great for shopping, visiting, etc. We have a bigger one to pull the caravan but one day that will be sold.

I'm with you ..... But I'd let Vin buy one! It's hard to get too far in Australia without a car.

I have always looked at vehicles as being nothing more than a means to get from point A to point B. No reason to spend mega amounts of money for something that I can buy much cheaper and still get the same results from. How come Holden ceased production a few years ago?

@JudyEv It's hard to compete domestically when you're flooded with cheap imports from abroad. I hate seeing any company go out of business due to foreign competition, but I guess that's just the reality of the world we live in today.

@moffittjc It all sort of works until one country falls out with another then it all starts to unravel.

I'm with you. Cars are just a means of transport. I guess they ceased production because of the competition from cheap imports. It's a great shame. I think we should be manufacturing as much as possible here so we're not forever dependent on other countries for our goods.
