This Chick Escaped Today

I had an escapee this afternoon. This little lady (the black and white one in the front) decided to venture out of the chicken coop while I filled the water bucket. This is a barred rock chicken. She is always a curious little gal. She is one of the hens that made it over to my other coop (just a wire wall as a divider separates the two coops. She didn't like the other side and they didn't like her either. She got picked on so I put her back where she belongs...the nice girl coop!! Anyway, after darkness fell I went outside to look for her. She was on the back side of the coop squatted down and snoozing already. I got her and returned her to the coop. At least she got to dine on some bugs and worms today and didn't have to worry about missing the late afternoon feeding. Photo Credit: Pixabay, Public Domain

She's pretty. I've never seen a chicken with that type of pattern on her feathers before. I wonder why the other chickens picked on her?

Probably because I have no barred rocks in that coop. She is one of my younger hens so brought her back to hang with the good girls and the old rooster.

@DaddyEvil I don't like that and have already told the hubby that we need one more coop. He has already committed to making me a tractor run that can be moved easily in the yard, but of course that project has never gotten started. I need to start prodding!

@kareng I'm glad she's not getting picked on anymore.

Lots of fun with your chickens. I remember the chickens growing up very well, especially the roosters.

I remember that the hens of my granny often tried to escape. They love to explore.

MIne all try to get treats or food first when I go inside the coops. I have found that by sticking my arm out with the bucket in my hand that keeps them from jumping up on me or trying to escape. My husband hates to feed them and hasn't caught on to that yet. He always complains that they attack him. LOL. I tried to tell him what works but apparently he doesn't believe me. Oh well!!

I have a spot in the cover to my run I need to fix before mine start getting out. The ice storm tore it loose.

@wolfgirl569 Yep! I haven't done anything today other than feed the animals. After the eye incident that made my decision to not do the Farmer's Market tomorrow. I still haven't worked on tagging things for flea market. I take that back--I did wipe off some books.

@kareng I understand that feeling. Sometimes think about selling all of them and not gardening. But then I would weigh 200 pounds because of eating my boredom

Some chooks/chickens really like their freedom, don't they?

We have been talking about letting them free range again. I just don't want any more events with a coyote coming in my yard!

@JudyEv My original flock was trained to come running back for a snack at dusk but I don't have but one left from the first batch of chickens I got. We will probably give this a try soon as it is warming up now. I stopped after a coyote made off with one of my chickens when they were free ranging at 9:30 in the morning.

That is why I didn't worry about getting her back in the coop until after dark. I usually don't have any trouble getting them then.

Ah, the chicken flew the coop! There’s someone a few streets over that has chickens (understand, I live in an urban subdivision, not in a rural area!), and I’ve found one of their chickens in my back yard, enjoying bird seed a couple of times.

We have some chickens free ranging in our subdivision now in Louisiana. I am surprised that there have not been complaints. It is also urban there but most don't want chickens in their yards!

That is a pretty common species here. They are pretty. My next species I want to add is a laced design on the feathers. They are gorgeous!!

@kareng I believe if you keep them outside, eventually few of them tend to follow you to the house.

Years ago, we had banty chickens. One was a big escape artist. She liked to go to the neighbors house down the road and eat their kitty food, like we didn't feed her! Last summer I found 2 chickens on my patio. No one around here keeps chickens, didn't know what to do. They hung around for several days, I called a friend who keeps chickens and she came and got them. At least she didn't run off and you found her safe and sound.
