We got LUCKY!

As I mentioned previously, I picked up our grocery order from Walmart yesterday. One of the items that has continually been out of stock since the beginning of the pandemic crisis is the freshly baked French bread that Walmart carries for only $1.00 a loaf. I put it in the shopping basket and figured that it would be sold out by the time they picked my order. But no!! We got a loaf of French bread. And is was fresh, as in just baked! We had a slice with our dinner last night with a little bit of butter spread on it. It was so good! Do you like French bread? I have to admit that is is a weakness for me. I love hot bread with butter on it. Photo Credit: Pixabay, Public Domain

That's fantastic! I'm glad you managed to get your French bread. I'm sure it was very nice. I haven't had any in a long time. If I got some I'd have to get plant based butter too to go on it! (I'm macrobiotic, which is close enough to vegan).

I love breads especially freshly baked ones. I remember when I was still young will wait for the baker to sell the newly baked goodies fresh from his oven. I will patiently wait for it even if it will take hours.

Ohhhhhh, fresh French bread - love it! I'm fine with just butter, but Hubby likes it with some garlic or garlic powder, sometimes parmesan cheese, or olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

French bread is absolutely a weakness of mine. My husband can't eat it (gluten intolerant), so I try not to buy it very often because I'll eat the whole loaf. Have you made a grilled cheese with it? Or french toast? Divine.

@kareng @CarolDM taught me a delicious way to make a deluxe grilled cheese. She added cheese and meatloaf. It's really delish with French bread.

I love warm bread with butter on it. We have been without a stove for a month so no bread. Our stove had to be ordered so we will have it in two weeks. My husband said we are going to the store and buying all kinds of things to fix in the oven.

Freshly baked French bread is so good. I like to cut it and eat it without adding anything to it. The contrast of the crispy crust with the soft, warm interior is enough for me.

When we were in France, I could have lived on bread and butter. The bread isn't the same here. I think it is the flour. The French baker in a little shop near our old place imports his own flour as he can't get the results he wants with local flour.

@JudyEv I am betting not! Look at all the additives in food now. That generation cooked mainly from pure scratch and yes, it had wonderful and full flavors without all the artificial stuff thrown in.

@kareng Mum could make beautiful pasty, all from scratch. Sometimes I think it's just my memory that makes me think some foods were so much tastier when I was a child.

I assume people are still baking lots of bread at home even as the pandemic starts to wind down, as I notice every time I'm at the grocery store that the yeast is always sold out. I have not noticed any freshly baked bread shortages at my local store, although I don't always peruse that section of the bakery. But it looks like they always have plenty available.

Or a winter time thing! I know I'm more likely to bake bread in the winter vs. the summer. Good observation on the yeast!!
