Conversation Starter for Small Talk

Whenever I am meeting a person for the first time, the usual conversation starter for small talk is to ask the time. It is so classic move but it still works. The rest will be a long conversation anything under the sun. I do this if I am in a long waiting line to a cashier and the like. It can kill the time until it is my turn. Honestly, I am a friendly soul and easy to go along with. What would be your conversation starter? Image Credit: thecollegefix.com

A lot of the time, if the other person has kids, I mention their kids. Everybody likes to talk about their kids, even to complete strangers that seems friendly. A few days ago I was in line at the supermarket when a little girl in front of me asked if I had any kids. I pointed at Pretty and told the little girl that Pretty was my "little kid". The little girl started giggling and her mom laughed. Then I visited with the mom until we reached the register.

I agree with you. Some people's soft spot is their kiddies. Having the sweetest smile can also do the trick.

@DaddyEvil I agree with that. But some kids are not that chatty.

@Shavkat Even a shy smile will work. But yes, kids are the easiest way to get people to talk.

It is a classic style but it is an effective one.

@Shavkat Yes, I think sometimes the classic style is more effective.

Whereas I start with questions like "How are you and your family?" Then talks about the weather and check about the person's liking then start discussing it.

I guess I cannot ask the second question because it is too personal.

I agree. We can do that for the starter of conversation, especially if they look unusual.

Mostly here, it would be a comment about the weather. Asking about the time is a good one as long as you're not wearing a watch!

I do not use a wristwatch, so it is a good excuse to start a conversation.

I will ask another question. If he or she will not respond, I will just walk away.
