How can we tell?

We have a problem with how we can tell if my student is sick. His parents always insist it is just that he is mad or something. He had a day that was bad last Tuesday. He cannot verbally tell us what hurts. I am working on some communication cards for him. We were pretty sure his throat hurt because he cried and would not eat. Mom said otherwise. Said he was just mad at something and I was feeding him food he did not like. Sure enough, three days later, I had a sore throat. It is even worse today. I am going to lay back down a little while. The last time he got sick, so did I. It looks like a trend. But I have the words to talk about it.

Parents are hard to deal with when it comes to their children. Why I stay away from all kids but guess that is your profession. My old bosses kids about the only ones I deal with and they force me.I can actually get away with saying whats truly going on because he be like sounds accurate.

If I were to quit this job it would be because of the parents.

@GardenGerty and you would probably worry about the kid with parents like that.

@bunnybon7 I worry that he will lose ground in the summer.

I am sure they need the break from him. But I agree that he was sick if you are now.

I have read online that many regard school as baby sitting services. We keep her posted on how he is doing, because if we did not, the family would be mad.

@wolfgirl569 It is hard for either of these parents to get off work for the sick kid, and I get it.

If I train him to use them, they should. See, I believe he has a lot more intellect than his mom or even our principal does. Our vision specialist sees a lot of intelligence there.

@BarBaraPrz Not necessarily with the kind of damage he has to his brain. On the other hand I have over thirty five years working with children and adults with special needs and I think I know a little bit about what I am doing.

@GardenGerty The power of positive thinking: if you believe it, it shall be so (or something like that).

They think we do not know anything and we cannot be trusted.

I can understand this is a real problem for you all. It sounds like his Mum needs to pick up on a few more cues though.

I think I actually spend more hours with him in a school week that she does. I will grant that he may have also been mad about something, but it was food he liked and he was eager for it until he put it in his mouth.

To me it sounds as if you are correct and that he has a sore throat.

Exactly. He got better quickly, but there were some things that concerned us that day.

I hope you point that out to the mom. She doesn't sound to bright herself.

Oh she is a teacher in a private school out of town. The last time we had to send him home with a fever his brother said we just took his temperature when he was all bundled up and napping. Brother had to pick him up because both parents work out of town. This was said when he returned to school, and my relief para told him "Yeah, that is why his para is at home sick today."

They never admit he is sick. He was not sick enough that we wanted to send him home, but there were some things that were concerning to us.
