How Cold is Too Cold to go Camping

19F (-7C) is too cold to go camping when it comes on the heels of a wet, rainy day. Why? Things that should move when you push the button tend not to when they are frozen. For some, it was the leveling feet. For some, it was busted pipes flooding the storage compartment of their camper. For us, it was the bedroom closet slide-out (circled in photo) freezing in the extended position. Whether it actually froze from the cold is open to question. No matter what the reason, it wouldn't slide in. This meant we couldn't leave, at least not until we figured out how to get it to work. No easy task, I assure you. It took over 2 hours, advice from several friends, calls to so-called experts, and a random suggestion from the campground owner to accomplish retracting the slide. We were ready to leave the camper there, which meant me taking off work tomorrow and driving back to find an RV repair shop that makes campground calls. Thank goodness that didn't happen. Tomorrow, I will be calling the service manager where the camper was repaired and maintained to ask if he has any idea why the controller failed to activate the motor when all the fuses were good and the control box seemed fine. It will be an interesting call. Other than this glitch, we enjoyed the weekend. How about you? Did you have a good weekend?

I would only camp in around 40 degree weather.

Smart, anything below 44 is when I get cold. Layers and blankets only help to a point. I have it measured 44 and below it is just annoyingly cold.

I told my missus that next year we will cancel our reservations if the forecast calls for such cold weather for our first trip.

It wasn't a bad weekend, it wasn't a great weekend either. We haven't been camping since October. But I am ready to go again.

We were really looking forward to this trip and, until the glitch, everything was going well. I just hope this coming weekend goes better even if we have to do a few things the roundabout way.

@crossbones27 It's not fixed yet. We still came to the beach this weekend. Just didn't use that slide. I'm calling service tomorrow to see about getting the rig back in.

We had heat. The rig has a gas furnace and an electric fireplace. It was when the slideout wouldn't slide back in that things got tense.

We were snug in the camper the night before what with the gas furnace and electric fireplace. Things only got ugly when the one slideout wouldn't work.

That was a real glitch indeed. I hope there is an easy solution.

So far it doesn't look like there will be an easy solution, but I'm going to try replacing a fuse or two and see if that makes a difference.

We were warm and cozy while inside the camper. It was when we went outside to get ready to leave that the cold hit us. We camped out your way this weekend at an RV Park just south of Winston-Salem.

Oh, dear. I haven't been camping in so long, it was my parents (particularly Dad) who took care of that kind of stuff.

We had a quiet weekend inside. Glad you were able to figure out how to get your part of the camper to slide back in.

On the plus side, at least you found the problem before it stick permanently! Still, makes me glad I am a fair weather camper
