Yark yark yarkita

Hi all,
Don't get me wrong, I'm very thankful to dog sit. It is an easy way to get some extra $ and I'm thankful for the opportunities I get.
Though the 2 dogs I'm with right now are trying to my nerves. They bark. A lot. Extensively. Sometimes it's something outside. Other times it's nothing I can see. I'm allowed to mildly scold and that's it.
If I talk to them firmly enough right away when they start - they settle. I say their names and then firmly ... "you're ok, it's fine.... that is ENOUGH now". But if they get much of a headstart they get almost like they're stuck in a loop. When you listen to barking for an extended period of time it's funny how the sound morphs
The one starts up. Yerk yerk yerk yerk yerk yerk yerk yerk , and then gets more and more wound up and yerk turns into yark yark yark yark yark yark and as the yarks get faster they turn into something that sounds like yarkita yarkita yarkita yarkita... that's just the smaller dog. The bigger dog must have a little hound in him because while the one dog is "yarking" the bigger dog is going awo awo awo awo awoooooof ooof ooooof ooooof awo awo awo oooooof oooooof oooooof
So... yeah, it's a regular concert at times around here.
It's hard to get them to stop once they really fire up and get going. I've tried ignoring them when they;re barking and giving them attention when they are calm and quiet. I've tried saying their names firmly followed by those calm phrases I was told to use.
Any ideas for calming dogs once they get stuck in a cycle of barking?

I guess you aren't allowed to shoot them, huh?
I have no idea. When I was a kid, if the dogs started barking, dad pitched them outside.

Ha ha ha, yeah no. I wouldn't do anything the owner's didn't ok first, but, let's just say IF they were MY dogs they would have had bark collars a long time ago

@DaddyEvil Tempting. I actually saw a cheap gadget on Amazon that looks like a TV remote, supposed to work to stop dogs from barking.... tempted...

@FayeHazel tell them quiet a bunch of times and after all day of it sometimes I get frustrated enough I put barking collars on them and it stops it immediately.

The sound morphs - oh that is hysterical. In my teens we had a dog who would not stop barking when there were strangers around. My dad had a few guests in the yard for a class one time . . . and my dog would not stop barking at them, so we had to put him inside and I stayed with him in the laundryroom. He eventually began loosing his "voice" and his deep bark became more like a gasp for air - a slow "uff, uffa, uff"

I've always told my dogs to SHUT up. Although, using those phrases might just confuse them. You have to respect the owner's wishes, though. I suggest bringing it up to their owner, and they can advise on how they want the situation handled.
