From my sister's garden

When we visited my sister recently, we had a stroll around her lovely garden. One of the many flower varieties she has is the gerbera. This is also known as an African daisy as the first descriptions of it originated in Africa. It is native to the tropical regions of that country but has since been introduced to other countries and has become a favourite as a decorative garden plant or as a cut flower. The domesticated cultivars come in a range of colours and sizes and, worldwide, it is the fifth most-used cut flower. The gerbera is used as a model organism studying flower formation. Another interesting fact is that it is resistant to deer. Photo is Vince’s of one of my sister’s gerberas.

@JudyEv We stopped bringing flowers into the house after we both had a problem when we brought flowers in last Spring.

I'm not sure how they go with frosts but it would be spring there now.

@Ronrybs My mother had two shade-houses and if she thought there was going to be a frost, she'd light a kerosene lamp in each and leave it going all night. It seemed enough to keep the frost at bay. You can't do that outside of course.

Is it too hot for them? You'd think if they were an African flower, they'd be used to heat. But I guess the cultivars are less hardy.

I think it's more about it being too arid as well as hot.

I like the idea of a flower resistant to being preyed upon by deer.

We found that the roos usually wouldn't eat anything that had a strong scent. There probably isn't much that deer don't eat.

I like those flowers, I had some in my garden but they went lost. I wonder what happened to them, resistant to deer but may be not to cats.

@JudyEv I do not know about roos, but the caterpillars loved the leaves.

Thanks. I'll tell him. I lost my point and shoot camera and we bought another but, up close, it doesn't shoot in focus. Vince thought I was shaking the camera but then he used it and didn't do any better. My other litle camera was a beauty. This was taken with his big one.
